My Philosophy and Approach to Wellness...

The foundation of primary care is prevention. Preventive medicine has been my passion throughout my career. Always looking for a better way to provide these services for my patients, it has been frustrating to live within the confines of the traditional practice of medicine. I have 30 plus years of experience and am excited to be able to offer my patients individualized and personalized care, all while having my undivided attention.

I first moved to the Lewes/Rehoboth area when I was 17 years old. I found that I was pulled toward the medical field after working many years as a Lifeguard with the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, providing emergency first aid services. I still remember receiving a call from my father, while at work, telling me that I had been accepted to medical school. In fact, he was so impressed that the school had sent me a personalized letter that read: “Welcome to Jeff” (really it meant “Welcome to Jefferson Medical College”).

After four years of medical school in Philadelphia and three years of family medicine residency at the Medical Center of Delaware (Christiana Care), I finally opened my first practice in 1991 in Rehoboth Beach. Fast Forward to today, my partners and I have been able to build the largest and most successful primary care practice in Sussex County, something I am extremely proud of and grateful for.

My wife and I live in Lewes with our dog Rhett. We enjoy spending time on the water, as there is nothing like the feeling of freedom leaving the confines of the shore and heading out in to the Atlantic for some fresh air. I am an avid woodworker; I have always loved building things and have recently tried to master woodturning.

All of these experiences have molded the way I practice medicine. Utilizing my engineering background daily as I solve problems to both diagnose and prevent disease. I look forward to being your personal physician and working together to help you be the healthiest version of yourself.

Testimonials from patients of Dr. Heckert

Ken and I moved from Bucks County, PA to Lewes Memorial Day, 2011. We had retired at 62 and consequently had trouble getting insurance in Delaware. After 6 months, we finally found individual policies for each of us. During our first visit with Dr. Heckert in mid-October, I mentioned to him that I got aches in the back of my neck and in my shoulders when I walked on the boardwalk. He gave… See more

This month my yearly evaluation indicated Optimal Relative Risk in all Cardiometabolic parameters. This was an improvement from the last two yearly evaluations where there were many Moderate Relative Risks. Dr. Heckert had been encouraging me to start a statin, my first medication. I wanted to continue to pursue diet and exercise. When once again it was not enough, I started a low-dose statin… See more

A few years ago I was getting ready to leave for a European cruise and had a routine appointment with Dr. Heckert the day before departure. My blood pressure was very high at his office which needed immediate attention. Dr Heckert made a number of calls and got me in to see a cardiologist that same day to take care of my problem I will always be thankful Dr. Heckert went that extra mile so I… See more

I remember the moment when my first lipid results came in after Dr Heckert prescribed a statin for the first time. We were both delighted and relieved! This transformative moment came after many years of my anxiety about high cholesterol and the refusal of other doctors to treat it. (They believed that my high levels of “good” balanced out the unhealthy levels of “bad”).
After Dr Heckert… See more

When Dr Heckert joined MDVIP, I had pretty much an ultimatum- join or relinquish him as my primary care physician. I joined- reluctantly, but after a year or so, decided the only benefit I received was treatment by Dr Heckert & his staff, so I told him I wasn’t happy. He was very gracious and said “that’s entirely your choice”
About 3 weeks later, I was rushed to the hospital after… See more
