My Philosophy and Approach to Wellness...

Over the years, I have treated patients with complex internal medicine and cardiac conditions, and these experiences have led me to the strong belief that the most effective kind of medical care is prevention. Hence, my practice philosophy has evolved into a proactive, collaborative approach to wellness. The MDVIP practice model enables the time and structure to effectively carry out this philosophy. I am passionate about providing the highest quality, patient-centered clinical care.

After completing my undergraduate studies at Washington University in St. Louis, I received both my MD and PhD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The majority of my postgraduate training was at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. After completing an internal medicine residency, I remained on faculty at Columbia for a year where I served as a chief resident in the Department of Medicine. I completed a general cardiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City before returning to Columbia for a fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology.

My practice is located in Chevy Chase, Maryland, walking distance from the DC Metro Friendship Heights stop. 24 hour coverage and same-day appointments are tenets of my practice model. I have hospital privileges at Suburban Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital and George Washington University Hospital, where I am an Assistant Professor of Medicine. I have been named as a Top Doctor in Washingtonian Magazine since 2014.

Fear has a way of gripping our hearts and minds when faced with a life-altering diagnosis. For me, this fear became all too real when he received his melanoma diagnosis. But within the depths of fear, he discovered the incredible power of courage and the unwavering support of his loved ones. It all began on a perfect night, filled with celebration and joy for my retirement after 50 years as a… See more

from Ellen in MD February 10, 2024 for Scott Shapiro, MD, PhD

I was recovering from a hip revision surgery just when Dr. Shapiro was starting in the practice of my cardiologist, who was retiring. I was home from rehab and feeling awful - exhausted, not thinking clearly, staying in bed most of the day, and my sons were pleading with me to call the doctor. I knew that the "new guy" was there on certain days of the week, so I wanted to wait until… See more

In 2018, I experienced heartburn and ended up in the ER. I reached out to my doctor. Scott Shapiro, so he could know what was happening. I shared with him that the hospital staff said I had a heart attack and that I would be kept over the weekend, and undergo further tests on Monday.

Fortunately, this was not acceptable to Dr. Shapiro. He arranged for my transportation to another… See more

Recently I was hospitalized for observation. Dr. Shapiro came in on a Saturday to see me although I was being taken care of by the hospital staff. The fact that he took off time from his family to see me although I was being taken care of was beyond the call of duty.
Also he is very good at connecting me with the appropriate specialists if I need one.

I moved here from NYC 3 years ago and had been unable to find an internist who I liked and who had the personal tome to give me .
I was referred to Dr. Shapiro through a friend and I must say, I am much less anxious knowing I have someone who is sincerely concerned about my Health and the doctors I surround myself with
I have never had an MDVIP before as it was never necessary but… See more

Scott Shapiro is a consummate professional and always there when I need him. I can reach him whenever I need him, he responds immediately no matter where is he is (last year he was out of the country and still responded to an urgent email within the hour) and he does what is necessary and does not overdo it. My blood pressure was recently elevated and he tried a few regimens until we got it… See more

from Arleen in MD March 8, 2018 for Scott Shapiro, MD, PhD

My husband and I were involved in a three car collision on I95 in Georgia leaving Florida in advance of hurricane Irma. Although our car was totaled, everyone was able to walk out of their cars and no one needed hospitalization. While trying to secure a rental car to get us back home to Maryland, I called Dr. Shapiro and told him I thought my husband and I should be checked out. His… See more
