Dear Dr. Berry (Rick, if I may, at my age & at yours):
I have much depended on your expertise, your ethics, and your communication ability over the years. There are reasonable reasons. You are an outstanding diagnostician. You have fine specialist contacts, and you refer patients to them as needed. You are current about medications, meds, and treatments (and this I know from my own followup research). You have seen me through some medical crises (meningitis, for one). You always leave the choices to me, even if sometimes they are unreasonable (such as my refusal of hospitalization when I had meningitis. O well. The cat saw me through it at home, I suppose.) Your expertise, perceptiveness, warmth, and humor (even in the most personal of exams). In short, thank you. I respect, appreciate and value your professional expertise, and I like and value you as a person. Now that your wonderful staff help you manage efficiently after Lu's retirement, I much hope that you'll see me to the end of the line. If not, I plan to be part of a rowdy and joyful retirement celebration with & for you.
