HEALTH CONTENT POSTS

Do you want to live until you are 80 years old? 90? Maybe even 100? It’s possible, but you’ll have to commit to a healthy lifestyle, which can help offset your genetic risk of diseases. Here are steps you can take in your 40s, 50s and 60s to help you live longer.

What’s the secret to longevity? It’s a question many of my patients ask. Unfortunately, no one knows yet. What we do know is that there are scientifically supported lifestyle behaviors that can help you live longer (and better). Check them out.

Which is better for weight loss – animal protein or plant protein? I get this question a lot. Here’s some information to help you decide which protein source may work better for you.

Plantar fasciitis is a common problem in my practice. While some people may need orthopedic or even surgical intervention, many of my patients find some relief through lifestyle changes and home treatments. Here’s what you need to know.

You might have heard me use the terms “probiotics” and “prebiotics”. These are two substances that help foster a healthy gut microbiome. And while you may be tempted to use daily over-the-counter probiotic and prebiotic supplements to boost gut health, your diet is the best source of both. Add these foods to your shopping list.

Your gut health is connected to your overall health. When referring to your gut health, I am talking about how well your body absorbs nutrients, remains disease-free, maintains a strong immune system and keeps a thriving, balanced composition of microorganisms. Here are six science-based tactics that may help improve gut health.

During office visits, you may have heard me mention triglycerides, a type of blood fat. They often take a backseat to cholesterol, but they can raise your risk for heart disease. Here’s what you need to know.

I encourage my patients to maintain relationships, find hobbies and get involved in the community. A lack of social connections can have a serious effect on your health. In fact, it’s been equated to smoking 15 cigarettes a day and has been linked to serious chronic conditions, such as these four.

Many of my patients forget that overexposure to the sun is not just a summer issue. Too much sun, regardless of the season, can damage your eyes and skin. Learn how to protect yourself and choose the most appropriate sun lotion for you.

Many of my patients were familiar with types of fat such as subcutaneous and visceral fat, but most have never heard of intramuscular fat, which resides in skeletal-muscle fibers. Not a lot is known about it, but it has been linked to serious heart conditions. Here’s what you need to know.

You already know that exercise can help prevent and manage heart disease and type 2 diabetes. But you may not realize that it’s also good for brain health, particularly in warding off dementia.

FEBRUARY 2026

Observances

2/14 Valentine’s Day

I encourage my patients to exercise and manage their stress to control their blood pressure. But just thinking of your significant other also helps, according to a recent study. Happy Valentine’s Day. Here’s what you need to know.

Most of my patients drink caffeinated beverages, which helps protect the heart, enhance cognitive function and improve blood sugar processing. However, most people are unaware of their caffeine intake, and too much can lead to GI issues, muscle tremors, headaches and disordered sleep. Here are some sources of caffeine, beyond the obvious coffee and tea. If you’re concerned about your intake, we can talk about it at your next appointment.

I regularly educate my patients on the importance of good quality sleep. Sleep affects many processes, including blood pressure control. Interestingly, sleep quality affects men’s and women’s blood pressure differently. Here’s more information.

Many of my patients wear devices that collect important health data; examples include continuous glucose monitors, smart watches, pedometers and heart rate monitors. Unfortunately, nothing is done with the data. If you’re collecting health information, be it from a wearable device or even a home blood pressure monitor, share it with me. Here’s how.

February is American Heart Month, a good time to discuss heart health issues. My patients are aware of the connection between their body composition, diet, sleep habits, fitness routine, smoking status, stress level and alcohol consumption and their heart health. What many of them don’t realize is the connection between heart disease and breast cancer. Here’s what you need to know.

Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, debilitating disease that significantly hinders your quality of life. Historically, MS has been considered a younger person’s disease. However, recent studies suggest that MS is becoming a disease of older Americans. Let me know if you have any questions after reading this blog.

Are friendships and social networking — real life or online — as important to your health as diet and exercise? Studies suggest yes, especially when it comes to your heart. Here’s how real-life and online relationships contribute to heart health.

I’ve always been on the fence regarding alcohol and health benefits. Older studies suggest light to moderate drinking may be heart healthy, though recent research has called those conclusions into question. If you’re a social drinker, talk to me about alcohol. In the meantime, this blog explains what you should know about alcohol and your heart.

Studies have shown that excessive added sugar consumption contributes to a wide range of health problems. However, the typical American diet is filled with sugar. A significant amount comes from beverages, which a recent study links to heart disease. Here’s what you need to know.

Many of my patients have a love-hate relationship with red meat. On one hand, it may be one of their favorite foods, but they also realize that regular consumption raises the risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. Red meat does have some health benefits. In fact, studies say you don’t have to skip eating it if you make healthy choices. Try these six tips the next time you're eating red meat.

Hand arthritis is a common condition, especially as we age. A wide range of treatments are available, and of course, some work better than others. But recently, methotrexate, an older drug historically used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and some cancers, has caught the attention of some researchers for providing moderate but meaningful pain relief. If you think you may need a boost to your current hand arthritis treatment plan, talk to me about methotrexate.

12/14 – 12/22: #HappyHanukkah! Hanukkah’s celebration lasts eight days. While this sounds fun, for many of my patients, it means eight days of preparing, cleaning, cooking, wrapping gifts, lifting boxes, socializing and possibly traveling, which can take a toll on their spines. If holiday festivities make your back and neck ache, here are some simple tips to help prevent the pain.

A person with her hands behind her back

12/25: 8 am: #MerryChristmas! Do you eat special dishes on Christmas? If yes, which ones are your favorites? I find that mainstream holiday fare — high-fat foods, alcohol and desserts – can often trigger heartburn with some of my patients. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help prevent heartburn. Here’s what you need to know.

A group of people eating at a table

12/31: It’s New Year’s Eve. Some of you will probably spend a nice, quiet evening at home, while others will paint the town. But many of you will probably have a drink or two to help ring in the new year. At the risk of sounding like a wet blanket, if you’re going to drink, make sure you’re doing so safely and understand how much you’re really drinking. And remember: Never drink and drive!

1/1 8 am: #HappyNewYear! Almost half of all Americans make New Year’s resolutions, yet only a small percentage actually achieve them. In fact, about 80 percent of resolutions fall by the wayside by February. Most people blame their lack of willpower. If you need help hitting your goals, try these five tips.

Do you sit for hours? Most of my patients do. Many of them have desk jobs and then watch TV at night; hobbies such as knitting, sewing and painting are also popular. And doom scrolling on phones has become part of most people’s daily routine. But sitting for hours can take a toll on your body. These tips can help offset the negative effects of sitting.

I always encourage my patients to listen to their bodies, and this time of year, your body is probably asking for more sleep. Throughout the year, your body’s sleep needs change. Many factors affect the amount of sleep your body needs, but arguably, the most influential is the amount of daylight you get each day. Here are three reasons why your body wants more sleep during the fall and winter.

Many of my patients wait all year long to eat their favorite holiday foods. But those nibbles can be problematic if you have diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease or kidney disease. Here’s how to enjoy your holiday favorites without having too much.

For years, lung cancer has been considered a man’s disease. However, lung cancer rates among women rose 84 percent over the past four decades, compared to men’s rates, which dropped by 36 percent. I’m even seeing this in my own practice. Why is this happening? Studies found that the increased risk of lung cancer may be linked to a woman’s reproductive history. Here’s more on the topic.

As a result, more than 50 percent of cancers are diagnosed in an advanced stage. A new type of test may change this dynamic. For years, I’ve encouraged my patients to adopt a Mediterranean style of eating, which includes olive oil. However, olive oil consumption almost doubled between 1990 and 2021, leading to brands offering olive oil at different price points and styles to keep up with the demand. The overwhelming number varieties has made it difficult to select the most appropriate olive oil for you. Here are some tips to make buying olive oil easier.

I have a few patients who have sworn off getting a flu shot because it didn’t work well for them. Sometimes, flu shots aren’t 100 percent effective, but they are considered the best method of flu prevention, lowering your risk of getting sick by 40 to 60 percent. Why don’t flu shots always prevent the flu? Here are three reasons.

I’ve talked with many patients about following a plant-based diet, and of course, I've gotten some pushback. Most people don’t want a diet limited to leafy green veggies and fruits. But you can embrace a plant-based diet that allows for some animal-based products like meat and dairy. Here’s how that works.

Many of my patients use home fragrances. I get it – candles, oils and plug-ins can make your house smell like fresh laundry, vanilla or even chocolate chip cookies. But are they safe? There are doubts. Fragrances can comprise thousands of chemicals, many of which are considered toxic. Here’s what you need to know.

Cold and flu season is around the corner. Now’s the time to strengthen your immune system. This means getting enough sleep, exercising, managing stress and consuming a nutritious diet. Yes, supplements are one way to go, but I prefer my patients get their nutrients from food. Here’s what you need to know.

If I am concerned about your heart health, I may check your levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO) – an enzyme that helps identify your heart attack risk. But it turns out that this test is more valuable than we once thought. A recent study found that elevated MPO levels also suggest a risk for stroke and all-cause mortality. Here’s more on MPO. Let me know if you have any questions.

I often remind my patients that stress, poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyle and dehydration can affect their gut health, and ultimately, their overall health. The gut has many responsibilities, so when it’s not properly cared for, you may gain weight, catch viruses more often or experience gastrointestinal issues.
