HEALTH CONTENT POSTS

Do you want to live until you are 80 years old? 90? Maybe even 100? It’s possible, but you’ll have to commit to a healthy lifestyle, which can help offset your genetic risk of diseases. Here are steps you can take in your 40s, 50s and 60s to help you live longer.

What’s the secret to longevity? It’s a question many of my patients ask. Unfortunately, no one knows yet. What we do know is that there are scientifically supported lifestyle behaviors that can help you live longer (and better). Check them out.

Which is better for weight loss – animal protein or plant protein? I get this question a lot. Here’s some information to help you decide which protein source may work better for you.

Plantar fasciitis is a common problem in my practice. While some people may need orthopedic or even surgical intervention, many of my patients find some relief through lifestyle changes and home treatments. Here’s what you need to know.

You might have heard me use the terms “probiotics” and “prebiotics”. These are two substances that help foster a healthy gut microbiome. And while you may be tempted to use daily over-the-counter probiotic and prebiotic supplements to boost gut health, your diet is the best source of both. Add these foods to your shopping list.

Your gut health is connected to your overall health. When referring to your gut health, I am talking about how well your body absorbs nutrients, remains disease-free, maintains a strong immune system and keeps a thriving, balanced composition of microorganisms. Here are six science-based tactics that may help improve gut health.

During office visits, you may have heard me mention triglycerides, a type of blood fat. They often take a backseat to cholesterol, but they can raise your risk for heart disease. Here’s what you need to know.

I encourage my patients to maintain relationships, find hobbies and get involved in the community. A lack of social connections can have a serious effect on your health. In fact, it’s been equated to smoking 15 cigarettes a day and has been linked to serious chronic conditions, such as these four.

Many of my patients forget that overexposure to the sun is not just a summer issue. Too much sun, regardless of the season, can damage your eyes and skin. Learn how to protect yourself and choose the most appropriate sun lotion for you.

Many of my patients were familiar with types of fat such as subcutaneous and visceral fat, but most have never heard of intramuscular fat, which resides in skeletal-muscle fibers. Not a lot is known about it, but it has been linked to serious heart conditions. Here’s what you need to know.

You already know that exercise can help prevent and manage heart disease and type 2 diabetes. But you may not realize that it’s also good for brain health, particularly in warding off dementia.

FEBRUARY 2026

Observances

2/14 Valentine’s Day

I encourage my patients to exercise and manage their stress to control their blood pressure. But just thinking of your significant other also helps, according to a recent study. Happy Valentine’s Day. Here’s what you need to know.

Most of my patients drink caffeinated beverages, which helps protect the heart, enhance cognitive function and improve blood sugar processing. However, most people are unaware of their caffeine intake, and too much can lead to GI issues, muscle tremors, headaches and disordered sleep. Here are some sources of caffeine, beyond the obvious coffee and tea. If you’re concerned about your intake, we can talk about it at your next appointment.

I regularly educate my patients on the importance of good quality sleep. Sleep affects many processes, including blood pressure control. Interestingly, sleep quality affects men’s and women’s blood pressure differently. Here’s more information.

Many of my patients wear devices that collect important health data; examples include continuous glucose monitors, smart watches, pedometers and heart rate monitors. Unfortunately, nothing is done with the data. If you’re collecting health information, be it from a wearable device or even a home blood pressure monitor, share it with me. Here’s how.

February is American Heart Month, a good time to discuss heart health issues. My patients are aware of the connection between their body composition, diet, sleep habits, fitness routine, smoking status, stress level and alcohol consumption and their heart health. What many of them don’t realize is the connection between heart disease and breast cancer. Here’s what you need to know.

Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, debilitating disease that significantly hinders your quality of life. Historically, MS has been considered a younger person’s disease. However, recent studies suggest that MS is becoming a disease of older Americans. Let me know if you have any questions after reading this blog.

Are friendships and social networking — real life or online — as important to your health as diet and exercise? Studies suggest yes, especially when it comes to your heart. Here’s how real-life and online relationships contribute to heart health.

I’ve always been on the fence regarding alcohol and health benefits. Older studies suggest light to moderate drinking may be heart healthy, though recent research has called those conclusions into question. If you’re a social drinker, talk to me about alcohol. In the meantime, this blog explains what you should know about alcohol and your heart.

Many of my patients know that I am an advocate for health snacking. Of course, I realize that healthy snacking is often easier said than done. This is why I’m recommending the tips included in this blog post.

Studies have shown that excessive added sugar consumption contributes to a wide range of health problems. However, the typical American diet is filled with sugar. A significant amount comes from beverages, which a recent study links to heart disease. Here’s what you need to know.

Everyone ages. It’s a process that none of us can avoid, despite how well we care for ourselves. There are two basic types of aging – chronological and biological. And while you experience both, one manner of aging can occur faster than the other. Here’s what you need to know.
