Couple Finds MDVIP Doctor’s Care – In Person, Via Texts, In Blizzard Conditions – Exceeds Expectations

At 52, Jane Manross was the picture of health – or so she thought. Imagine her shock when she went for her annual wellness exam with her long-time general practitioner, Dr. Jack Yakish – who months earlier had become an MDVIP-affiliated physician – and he discovered a heart murmur. Could be significant or not, but enough to warrant further tests. An EKG revealed an abnormality that raised more red flags. “When you put those two together,” Dr. Yakish says, “they cannot be overlooked.”

So began an odyssey – from discovering a serious health issue to having open-heart surgery - to meeting her doctor at his office after hours during a blizzard – that demonstrates why even the most healthy patients need highly engaged personal physicians on their medical team.

Within the next week, an echocardiogram revealed a ¾-inch tumor in her heart. Open-heart surgery successfully removed the tumor.

When it was time to be discharged, the hospital staff were reluctant to send Mrs. Manross to her home 100 miles away. She was released into Dr. Yakish’s care where her recovery progressed normally. They were in constant contact, by phone, email, text messages and in face-to-face visits. Then, a week later, Jane and her husband, Deac were home celebrating Jane’s birthday with a decadent chocolate cake. At 8:00 PM she suddenly felt her heart rate rise and a throbbing in her neck. Her husband checked her blood pressure which had spiked to 175/102 with a pulse of 120. They called Dr. Yakish, who told her to immediately take two doses of her beta blocker two hours apart and he offered to make a house call. The Manrosses instead decided to brave the snowy, rough roads and go to the emergency room 30 miles away. They monitored her vitals and called Dr. Yakish along the way. He recommended she take another dose of medication.

By 9:30 PM, weather worsening and a heavy snow now a blizzard, they took her blood pressure again. It was dropping. Advised of this, Dr. Yakish diverted the Manrosses to meet him at his office. They wondered what caused the incident. Was it the caffeine and cocoa stimulus from the cake? Her condition stabilized and Dr. Yakish evaluated her. He was confident the episode was instead a post-operative heart irritability and as it had passed, he sent them home. He believes that the intervention saved the Manrosses, the insurance company and the system no less than $10,000 which often includes ER visit, CT scans, bloodwork, EKG, attending physicians, specialists and an overnight stay.

During Jane’s pre-op and post-op period, Dr. Yakish also followed Deac Manross’s heartfelt and informative entries on CaringBridge.com, the website where people facing serious medical conditions can journal openly about their case, care or outcomes for family and friends. “I read it every day,” Dr. Yakish recalls.

“He offered to come down to our house (It's 2014...a house call? Wow!),” wrote Mr. Manross on Caringbridge. “We never felt like we were intruding on our doctor,” Mrs. Manross added. “MDVIP removed that feeling.”

Today, Mrs. Manross continues to recover at home, cat in her lap, and thankful for her decision last year to join MDVIP. She says, “If I did not have my extensive, annual exam, my tumor might not have been caught in time.”

I and my husband could not be more happier with Dr. Susan Richarme and her competent staff. It's a pleasure each time we go to her office and we feel more like family than patients. She's a wonderful doctor and person, plus a good friend to us. Her office is beautiful and doesn't feel like a doctor's office. It's just all surreal. We are so delighted to have the opportunity to continue having her as our primary care physician and hope we will be that way for many years to come.

Before MDVIP started, My husband of 48 1/2 years and myself were treated by Dr. Michael L Carr in Lexington, KY. My husband was with Dr. Carr for 18 years, and continued with him until his death in 2011. I now am apart of Dr. Carr's MDVIP practice and could not be more satisfied. Although I live two hours away from my doctor, I gladly travel those two hours for an appointment with him. All because I know he gives his all for each patient. Since he has joined the MDVIP program, the extra time he has with me in the office about my health care needs have made me feel more like family than a patient. Dr. Carr is the most efficient doctor I have ever been in contact with. Thank you Dr. Carr and your MDVIP group for taking such good care of me.

My MD-ViP Dr. Terry Belden has been treating me for at least 25 years and I had no intention of giving him up when he joined the new program. He was always a very caring and concerned doctor, but since he now has limited his number of patients, he is now more relaxed, has more time to sit and and explain, listen, and has made it possible for me to trust him with anything I may need to discuss with him. Although I am now on a fixed income, I feel that in the long run I have saved money by the quality of care I receive. I will stay with the program as long as I can. I think it is definitely enhancing my health and will likely prolong my life.

Dr. Steven Gerber was our family physician prior to MDVIP and continues to be. We have absolute confidence in his caretaking. However, since he has been part of MDVIP he as more time to spend with us during our visits to him. We have access to his private phone number and have already called him with a problem. During the weekend he ( Dr. Gerber) was attending a party and my husband, Joseph, needed to to speak with him about an important medical problem he was experiencing. My husband called Dr. Gerber on his private line and Dr. Gerber asked Joe to meet him at his medical office in Cherry Hill, NJ. He left the party promptly and did, indeed, meet Joe and took care of him. How many doctors do you know who would do such a thing? We love him!

I feel Dr. Marie Delcambre has given me such comprehensive, excellent care that it is the reason I am alive. At age 64, I am suffering the consequences of having made poor choices for most of my life. My weight had sky rocketed to over 300 lbs. I had type 2 diabetes, HTN with blood pressures over 200/100, blood sugers so out bounds I had gone to 4 injections of insulin daily, and I had a elbow surgical wound that hadn't healed in 2 years. I could go on and on. I had numerous hospitalizations. I had several illnesses that run in families such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Spinal Stenosis and osteoarthritis. Not to mention Advanced degenerative disc disease and lungs that had the functioning of a person who is 99 years old. I had discovered specialists don't talk with each other any more. The examples of this were astounding including one who told to me to tell the surgeon what surgery to do on my elbow after it hadn't healed, at that point, for 18 months. Dr. Delcombre had to summarize it all and then put it all together. She was the first physician to truly spell out to me how critical my weight had become and what my fate would be eminently if I didn't change. I have now lost close to 100 lbs, no more insulin injections only oral medication and I now have more muscle tissue than fat tissue. What a surprise as I can do limited physical activity. I haven't been in the hospital for two and a half years. On my last physical, we talked about my health problems and where we go next to keep me continuing toward my health goals. My husband had to place an after hours call to Dr. Delcombre and she was gracious, solved our problems and called our pharmacy while she was at a hospital attending her grandchild's birth! I will never regret participating in the MDVIP program. My husband is my care giver to coordinate my health needs at home. He is completely comfortable now to tell or ask the doctor anything about my care. I have many more health problems with complicated care and I have total confidence in my MDVIP.to keep it all coordinated

After having numerous complications from a surgery of 4 years ago by a different doctor, my primary care doctor, Dr.Marie Delcambre understanding how frustrated I was, asked if I was ready for a second opinion? "Yes", I responded emphatically...as I was having a lot of pain in the mildest of activity, breeding if I lifted too much weight or by reaching too high and no resolution via the doctor who had done the surgery.

She referred me to an excellent GYN/Urologist and my road to recovery began. I recently had repair surgery and both the doctor who performed the second surgery and my physical therapist are so very pleased with my progress toward total recovery. I am thrilled to be on the road to good health again.

I also appreciate the thoroughness Dr. Delcambre and her staff take in my annual exam and the time she spends with me explaining all the test results and if there is an area I need to work on,, we will have the time to discuss the remedy. There is no feeling of being rushed in and out of Dr. Delcambre's office...but a sense of partnership in helping me maintain good health. She has been very helpful with sharing information and giving explanations and making referrals when needed. I appreciate her caring attitude.
