After getting a " radical prostatectomy " in the wake of an unacceptably high PSA count, performed on me by a well regarded surgeon at a top ranked hospital; the successful surgery notwithstanding, I endured a very painful in-hospital recovery. A particular nurse's inattention and my famous surgeon's surprise disappearance coincided with my worsening physical condition; which led to my emergency transfer to yet another highly rated hospital nearer my north Virginia home. While my clinical access as an in-hospital patient improved, the quality of the care I received remained mixed ar best. Unbeknownst to me, three months following my 10/9/2019 surgery, I was suffering from pneumonia; my measured blood counts were wrong, thus deceiving; and was developing sepsis. My worsening condition inspired my wife to contact our esteemed Family Physician, Dr. Cynthia Burns, M.D. ( now in Great Falls MDVIP ) whom we both know literally saved my life. Dr. Burns' pro-active, omni-competent, timely and unrelenting clinical intercession on my behalf rattled the right cages. Dr. Burns has become my family's Ground Zero for all things medical, and our proven heroine.

At the beginning of October, my Dad’s Dr of 43 years retired. He had found somebody to replace him, and her name is Dr. Cynthia Burns. Today was his annual physical, and his first appointment with her, and we couldn’t be more pleased! My Dad is 86 years old, and I am his caregiver. She sat and explained all the test results and was very patient or I asked a lot of questions. She was very thorough, which I really appreciate, but more than anything… She looked my Dad right in the eyes when she was going over the test results. She went into detail about what everything meant and what her concerns were and test that she would like us to get for him. She looked at him and said that she would never “force him to do them“, it would be his choice, his decision. My Dad has some cognitive issues after his cardiac arrest, but he is still capable of understanding- and it meant the world to me that she treated him with respect and compassion. She also explained how the two appointments she wanted us to make could be helpful to him cognitively. … and me of the most important things - She allowed him to tell stories. (He writes our family stories to share with us, in which he takes great pride, so he did really well having to be there so many hours). Afterward, I asked if he liked his new doctor, and he said “yes”, and I said, “me too”. It is great to have a doctor who you feel is really listening to you and who really cares! Thank you, Dr. Burns! P.S. She was even patient when I’d ramble on , also. Sometimes I don’t “catch myself “ when my Adult ADHD acts up, like during his appointment, but she would gently get me back on track, which was very helpful! :)

Meet Cynthia Burns, MD

My internal medicine practice is in Great Falls, Virginia, and serves the surrounding communities of Reston, McLean, Vienna, Tysons, Herndon and Sterling. My MDVIP-affiliated practice offers services, including comprehensive, advanced health screenings and diagnostic tests, that go far beyond those found in concierge medicine practices. I also offer conveniences like same- or next-day appointments with minimal waiting.

My passion as an internal medicine physician is to provide you and your family with more personalized care and more time to cover health concerns with you. To help accomplish this, I am pleased to offer the MDVIP Wellness Program Plus , which incorporates a cognitive screening and personal medication management program among other advanced tests and tools to help us better combat the problems that can develop as we age.

I cherish the opportunity to foster more personal physician-patient relationships, and for years, I believe this has been the foundation of my primary care practice. I take more time to listen to my patients, better understand their goals for improved health and help give a clearer view of their overall health so that we can better establish a wellness plan. I feel it is important to work as a team while utilizing my experience and knowledge to help guide health decisions.

As a board-certified internal medicine physician, I have many years of training and experience in hospital medicine and critical care. I enjoy the challenge of helping to better address with you acute and chronic illnesses, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, hypothyroidism, COPD and many other chronic conditions. My other areas of interest include women's health, exercise, nutrition and preventive medicine.

MDVIP-affiliated physicians use the Wellness Program Plus to help prevent little things from becoming big things – working to help patients enjoy life and be healthier. Those who value their health will appreciate having a closer doctor-patient relationship. Because MDVIP-affiliated physicians have smaller practices, they have more time for you, so you can receive the individualized care and service you deserve. Physicians offering the Plus program have a different set of testing to choose from than physicians in the traditional program; this testing looks at additional health risks. Plus doctors also use different cognitive testing and offer a medication review program.

MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.

Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
