Dr. Stillson and I share an interest in and appreciation for Irish traditional music. For me, no visit is successful without news of his and his family's exploits and accomplishments -- so much so that my wife accuses me (wrongly, I should insist) of listening to that more than to the very helpful medical recommendations and evaluations he imparts. My great comfort level with him is inspired in part by the interest he has not only in my infirmities but in my well-being. Some time ago, when I was in the hospital for complications from a joint replacement, and under the immediate care of other medical folks, he visited with a gift for me -- an Irish whistle with with a device that allowed it to be played very softly without distorting the pitch -- softly enough at least to stay under the radar of the "ward police". Besides his exceptional medical knowledge, his calm ability to listen and evaluate beyond what I think I've told him, and his availability at all times, that incident with the whistle stands out for me in appreciating his dedication to me and his other patients.
