Early in Dr. Judy Okimura's career, when she was at the Queen's Health Clinic in Hawaii Kai, I saw her for a chronic cough, that would come and go, but which
usually lasted for months and months driving me crazy. Prior to this visit, I had seen FOUR different doctors, all of whom offered different explanations, but no solution. One even prescribed a drug called Fenesin along with codeine. He wanted me to take two Fenesin tablets three times a day. Fenesin contains the same ingredient as the OTC Nyquil, but is 6 times the dosage. That' like drinking 12 capfuls of Nyquil each time. Even that with the codeine didn't help one bit. Dr . Okimura saw me, asked me some thoughtful questions, and said it's either asthma or chronic bronchitis, and it didn't matter which because the treatment was the same for both conditions. She put me on five days of Prednisone and then the inhalant, Advair. Within one day after beginning treatment, I noticed significant improvement, and the disappearance of all coughing within a week. It was like being born again !!! I sent her a thank you card afterwards telling her how she much she helped me. The second time, I was on a trip in China. I woke up one morning with a red and pusy eye. I went to the tour guide and said I needed to see a doctor to get a prescription for the conjunctivitis I had. He said, no need to see a doctor, all he needed was the name of the medicine I needed and he could go to any pharmacy and get it just by asking for it. I expressed astonishment, but he said this is China, no need prescription. So I texted Dr. Okimura, and it took a while to make a connection because I was outside the main cities. She sent me a short list of antibiotic drops that would work and instructions, and I gave it to the tour guide. At our next stop, he went to a pharmacy and got the medicine (not a Chinese knock off, but the same branded medicine you would get in the US. ) and said I only owed him $4.00. The third time is when I told Dr. Okimura my wife was always complaining about me not holding my head up straight when I walk, Dr. Okimura scheduled me for a Dexascan test, and that's when I discovered I had osteoporosis. I shudder to think how much more my bone mass might have diminished if she hadn't ordered the Dexascan then, and I went on for more years before beginning medical intervention. So I have much to be thankful for that Dr. Okimura is my doctor !!!!
