About Walter Walthall IV, MD

I am a board-certified family practice physician located in Northeast San Antonio, TX. I have served the San Antonio community for over 23 years, following in the footsteps of my grandfather, who practiced in the same region for over 50 years. My grandfather was far and away the most influential person in my life. He used to tell me that, as a physician, ”When I walk into a room with a patient, I am not the expert in the room: the patient is.” He also told me that if I listened long enough, I can learn how I might support them. I have never forgotten that and aim to follow his advice every day.

My mission is to provide God-centered, compassionate, evidence-based care that focuses on the whole person, building a unique and individualized care plans that can help patients as they pursue their goals of better physical health, emotional wellness and spiritual vitality. My aim is to walk alongside patients, nurturing and building a trusting doctor-patient relationship that allows for open discussions about healthier living. This approach to medicine, placing encouragement and empowerment on the individual person, I believe, can help lend itself to a patient working toward better outcomes focused on their needs and desires.

My MDVIP-affiliated practice offers services, including comprehensive, advanced health screenings and diagnostic tests, that go far beyond those found in concierge medicine practices. I offer same- or next-day appointments with minimal waiting. Yes, we have a waiting room. No, you will not spend much time in it. I look forward to meeting you, sitting down and developing a personalized health plan that can help address your needs and concerns.

I spent several days comparing in-network Aetna providers and finally narrowed it down to Dr. Walthall. Unfortunately, when I called to schedule, I was told he isn’t—and won’t be—accepting new patients. Not ideal, but I understand directories aren’t always current.

The issue came when I tried to flag the error. I explained that he’s still showing up under Aetna’s “accepting new patients” filter and suggested it might need to be updated. Tracy, the receptionist, corrected me saying the listing just reflects availability for existing patients. When I clarified again, she dismissed it with, “Well, he’s not accepting new patients.” At that point, it felt less like an oversight and more like a disregard.

I’m sharing this because reviews about the front desk experience had already raised some flags. After my own call, I can see why. If I’d been met with a more courteous and professional tone, I might have considered establishing care with another provider at the practice. But that interaction made it clear this office isn’t the right fit.

Dr Walthall and his staff are extremely rude.

Don’t go here.

Very kind, listens well. There is a lady in the front who sits just behind the first door in front (not the first one you meet). She brings the whole practice down with her rudeness and attitude problem. She needs to learn customer service skills and get a job where she is not interacting with clients. Everyone else there bends over backwards to help.

I can't say too much about the doctor himself because I did not get to meet him. But I had an appointment set for 2:50 as a new patient and arrived at 2:20. Was informed at 3:30 that he still had 3 patients infront of me. I understand things come up but there is a point in time that i should be notified.I respectfully let the receptionist know that i would be leaving due to this issue and not wanting to have a repeat experience i have decided to look for a more professional pratice to use.

Really wanted to become a patient here, was referred by my insurance, and double checked their website before I called that it was accepted. Called to make an appointment but was told "as far as I know we don't accept it". Didn't double check or anything, even after I explained I was referred by the insurance.

Received a text that my appointment for May 5th was canceled. I called in to reschedule and was told the first appointment available is June 2nd, mind you this is a new patient appointment.
On the search again for a primary that is actually accepting new patients and available.

I don't usually do reviews but i had to make an exception for Dr. Walthall and his staff. They are exceptional. They take really good care of their patients. Wait times are short, the doctor takes his time, prescriptions are easy to get, and everyone is friendly and helpful. What more could you ask for

Dr. Walthall correctly diagnosed my symptoms and referred me to a really great doctor to get treatment. If he wasn't quick to listen to my concerns, my condition would be far worse than it is now. Great doctor!

I have been using Dr. Walthall for years. He demonstrates caring about the whole patient, not just treating symptoms. As a primary care physician, he is busy and I understand that sometimes patients book and appointment for one thing, then bring up three others which can cause him to run late. But once he is in the room, you have his full attention.

I've not experienced the front office issues others have mentioned, but nothing would surprise me at this or any other family doctor's offices. Sometimes you just have to take the bad with the good.

Dr. Walthall is very straightforward and honest. With the electronic medical record systems that have been implemented, it has taken away from doctors being doctors. I am in another industry that uses electronic records and it has destroyed our time to spend with our clients. He doesn't like prescribing medications just to prescribe them. I have been going to him for 20 years and he has never misdiagnosed me once. I do however agree that the office staff for this group of doctors is difficult to work with about half of the time.

This Doctor should have his license taken away and burned. He is very rude and seems like he doesn't know what to do. He misdiagnosed me three times. This doctor seems like he is money hungry. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. Yuck!

Frequently Asked Questions

Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.

Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.

MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
