Meet Steven Spencer, MD, FAAFP

In my 30 years of practicing medicine, it is clear to me that some of the most valuable help I can give my patients is more time and focused attention. I affiliated with MDVIP because I believe quality time is necessary to form a more personal relationship with each patient and provide more comprehensive medical care, not just offer a bandage or a pill.

My MDVIP-affiliated practice provides me the opportunity to practice medicine with a patient-focused model. It allows me time to spend building the kind of relationship needed to better focus on prevention and wellness, which helps to keep you healthier. Along with the conveniences of unhurried and longer appointments and being able to reach me during and after hours, I emphasize preventive medicine. I also partner with you for treatment plans for diabetes, hypertension, weight loss, thyroid disease and many other conditions. As one of my patients, you can enjoy a return to the way I think medicine should be practiced. I am a true advocate for your health.

While my practice location is in Katy, Texas, I am proud to care for patients in Houston, Richmond, Cypress, Fulshear and surrounding areas. I have established relationships with many specialists, too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.

Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.

MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.

I have been a patient at Kelliwood for more than 6 years. I take a regular set of prescriptions to treat a chronic disease. I agree with the other reviewer, Dr. Spencer and Dr. Anthis are caring physicians. BUT, their office staff, nurses and support people are horrible. They are often rude, and they often fail to complete their tasks appropriately. It seems to me that the business manager, Melissa, is not doing her job in managing the office staff, and that Dr. Spencer is continuing to tolerate (or maybe doesn't know about) the rudeness and poor performance of his nursing staff.

In particular, Dr. Spencer's office regularly fails to authorize refills in a timely manner, and does not communicate effectively with the pharmacy, which then results in me not having prescriptions available. Managing my disease requires taking prescriptions regularly, so this failure puts my health in jeopardy. A key problem appears to be Connie, a nurse assigned to manage refill authorizations. She does not authorize promptly, and when I called to follow up, she always blames the patient or pharmacy. Despite repeated attempts to talk to her boss - Dr Spencer, or Melissa the business manager, Connie always intercepts the call and then claims that they didn't want to talk with me. The last time I talked with her, she said that Dr. Spencer told her to apolgize, which she did perfunctorily, and at the end of the conversation, she told me that I was a rude, and bad patient! I believe she is covering up her incompetence.

It is a basic, simple thing to authorize prescriptions on time. They don't do it right, and the woman in charge of it seems like she is covering up the problem.

Came here 3 times and each visit was not the best experience. Receptionists arguing behind glass, not friendly and never smile. Attitudes...was my first visit. Every time I’ve been I have gotten prescribed the wrong meds. They are very fast and get you in and out, which explains the wrong prescriptions. Last experience was the last straw. Got prescribed meds that weren’t working. Sick for over a week, which never happens. Called back on 5th day for help. Said they prescribed steroid pills, with the antibiotics I had been already taking. Thanks to an emergency clinic, found out i was taking 2 strong antibiotics which explains my horrible stomach aches. I even asked if I need to continue the original antibiotic and they said yes! Which was completely wrong. So called back to the nurse to tell them about the wrong prescriptions. I needed steroid pills with antibiotics, not 2 different antibiotics!! Nurse had nothing to say. Thanks for emergency clinic I feel better instantly. Never going back to this place!! Plus they charge $10 every time you need to pick up paper prescription.
Never write reviews but this was a horrible experience.

The medical team is great! The receptionist is rude! She opens the glass door and says "name?" how unprofessional! I should have said "Well, good morning to you! My name is..." Must be a millennial thing...

Needed a doctor because we are new to the area. Dr. Spencer led us down a rabbit hole. Took my daughter in and he said she had the crud. Less than 12 hours later we are rushing to ER to find out she has pneumonia. Considered it a lil mistake, went in for follow up appt with her other parent after requesting blood work, etc, get the results but he said she was only low in vitamin d which is common with girls, take results to another dr only to find out she has hypothyroid from another dr. Ugh. What a waste of $. Again, rabbit hole.

I do not recommend this office. Amanda and Lindsey are great but the staff is EXTREMELY RUDE and condescending. Veronica has been rude to me more than once. Today they lost my business because of Veronica. Do not use this practice. Go to Village Family Practice instead.

Stay away from Dr. Steven Spencer. I took both of my kids to him when he first started and my husband has been seeing him for over 25 years. Twice we were billed for labs that we did not approve in the tune of six and seven thousand dollars. I called and no one would return my calls. When we got the second bill I called and actually got someone. I was told if I filled out a hardship form it would be taken care of. Why should I have to fill out a hardship form when they are charging me for something that was never approved? The last time my husband went in for his checkup he got a call to come back and talk to Dr. Spencer about his results. Dr. Spencer walked him to the checkout and told them not to charge him for this visit. Guess what he received a bill. I called two more times and no one returned the call. Today they called my husband because they want him to come in for refills on his meds. He told them what happened, was put on hold and the girl came back on and told him the billing lady said there was no evidence of that & he is responsible. This doctor does not care about anything but money and taking care of his ranch. I can't believe that after 32 years of using him this is the way we are treated. STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PRACTICE.

I don't understand the negative reviews. I've never waited more than 15 mins in the waiting room, and Dr Spencer is amazing. I can talk to him about anything, he pays 100% attention and knows what to do. I will never EVER use another Dr while I live in Katy

I have been going to Dr. Spencer since 2004. Awesome doctor! Listens and doesn't lecture. I, too, was bothered by the office staff over the years....not friendly at all! Today was MUCH different! The atmosphere was completely uplifting, positive - everyone was delightful and helpful! Don't let the negative reviews make you decide against this doctor.

I was patient of Kelliwood Family Practice for 15 years. Notice that I said Kelliwood not Dr. Spencer. That's because I saw Amanda Smith the entire time. She was fabulous - very thorough. When doctor Spencer notified us that he was changing his practice model, I decided to leave. Amanda is working in another specialty area so I'm still searching for the right fit.

I have known Dr. Spencer for many years and have always even when he was at his busiest, received the highest quality care. The care now feels like the red carpet treatment. The staff are lovely and caring. I don’t want to think about him retiring as that will be a sad day for me indeed.

I would not recommend this office to anyone I know. The Drs are good but since you deal with nurses and the office staff more then you will be treated poorly. Nobody in the office will return phone calls. I have waited over 3 weeks and have yet to hear from anyone despite calling every 3 days and leaving voicemails.

I started going to Dr. Spencer about a year ago. I've been a couple of times since. Always get in to see him in a reasonable amount of time. Don't wait too long in office. He listens and gets me taken care of. Don't really have opinion of office staff. I check in and they tell me when I can go see him. Don't need much more from them I guess.

Been with Dr spencer for years!!! Now he's reducing his practice size and wants you to pay 1800 dollars a year on top of your copay. Asked office if they are going to be recommending another dr because i know most people cant afford 1800 bucks and was basically told i was chit out of luck. This is what happens when money not patient care takes over

I have been a long time patient and can say nothing bad about my care experience with the PAs and doctor there. I had to leave because I can't seem to get an appointment the same day that I am sick. If you are calling for check-ups, preventive care, and other scheduled visits, I am sure this practice will be fine for you. I just complained about chest pain and was told they could see me next week. That's all for me.

The heath care industry no longer cares. I want to give more stars to this office but I can't give it more than just 2. Generally they don't return calls, and on my recent visit, i went to check on a potentia blood clots in my legs. I had a blood test and they sent me to do an ultrasound sound. It has been more than week and I haven't heard from anyone. They haven't returned my follow up calls either.
