Doctor Arthur Powell answered my call on the way to his Son’s wedding. He has been available for calls, visits, and tearful drop in meetings. In my late 50's, after the sudden death of my husband, I started to slowly gain weight. I wasn't too concerned at first since I had suffered a major trauma and I knew that post-menopausal women tend to gain some weight anyway. But even though I generally ate thoughtfully and cooked mostly fresh, healthy foods the trend continued. For over 10 years I researched, tried and stuck with a number of sane, reasonable diet programs, several of which included counseling. I avoided fad and "quick" weight loss programs and excercised regularly since I developed routines that I actually enjoyed and I often worked with a trainer as well. I lost five pounds many times but wasn't able to lose much more. A year and a half ago, when my doctor - who had recently moved to MDVIP - described me as "morbidly obese," I felt truly mortified. I tried to swallow my embarrassment and not cry while telling him frankly about my struggles over the years and my frightening sense of hopelessness about my situation. He listened patiently and then asked if I'd like to try Ozempic. He had samples and said it was working well for several of his patients. We spoke about how it works, how safe he believes it is and about possible side effects. It was a huge relief to feel heard and not judged. He understood that we "fat folks" are not necessarily lazy overeaters, that some bodies just have a tendency towards weight gain that others don't. He supplied me with samples of Ozempic, then Wegovy and now prescribes Semaglutide which I get from a compounding pharmacy. It works very slowly for me and I've had to be careful about raising the dose as I'm prone to difficult nausea. But it's working! I've lost 20 pounds and hope to lose 20 more. It's such a relief to no longer feel doomed to a life of being forever fat. I'm grateful for my doctor's kindness, sensitivity and willingness to help me take a chance on a relatively new product.

Arthur Powell is a physician who understands how to work with me. He has a very friendly laid back approach to our communication. He makes sure to get clearly yet diplomatically what's important in my care. He has a way of getting me to come to the conclusions of what's needed rather than him acting like most docs in my past and try to dictate. That always made me uncomfortable and lack trust. He shares information and in doing so we come up with solutions together.
He also has and understands how to handle urgent situations. i had what turned out to be a kidney stone. I thought it was an appendicitis do to a past situation that settled down before they needed to remove it. As soon as I was settled in Henry Ford ER he had one of the MDVIP docs come over to check up on me and make sure I was getting the care I needed. The doc he sent over also made sure that I was in a good place mentally before leaving.
Due to my cholesterol and hypertension. Dr Powell recommended a highly regarded Cardiologist. I found him to be arogent and based on the tests he ordered 100% wrong on his initial assessment. The second appt with said doctor I learned to like him less.
My father-in-law has a cardiologist that i like. So I asked Dr Powell his thoughts. He said he was excellent and told me that there was another excellent person in the same practice in case I had any issues getting in. I ended up with a great doctor.
The whole point is that Arthur Powell is flexible and understands that there are many ways to get things done. He always makes sure I understand the decisions we make, and makes me feel part of the process. I have yet to get bad advice from him. He is also very responsive when I reach out.
