About Don Hurley, DO, FAAFP, DABFM
I have been passionate about helping people for as long as I can remember. I decided to become a family doctor when I was seven years old. I became an osteopathic physician because the philosophy of osteopathic medicine is to help treat the whole patient, not just their symptoms. I wanted to be a family physician to spend more time with patients and their families to review treatments, answer questions and work together to help them to understand their treatment choices.
My wife and I settled in Charleston, South Carolina, more than 35 years ago, and most of my patients reside in the Charleston tri-county area. Our family and extended family live here.
My MDVIP-affiliated practice offers services, including comprehensive, advanced health screenings and diagnostic tests, that go far beyond those found in concierge practices. My patients have my cell phone number to use for more urgent matters. I also offer the Wellness Program Plus, comprised of advanced screenings and tests.
I am dedicated to discussing what may be making a patient unwell and reviewing what may be underlying causes. This is why focusing on the whole patient is my passion. I do not hesitate to pick up the phone to speak with specialists and other providers on behalf of my patients.
Being affiliated with MDVIP allows me to spend more time with patients and get to know them on a deeper level. I offer same-day or next- day visits with minimal waiting, along with longer appointments. These types of services are typically outside the limits of what traditional primary care offices can offer.
I am affiliated with local hospitals, including Roper St. Francis Healthcare, MUSC, Trident Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic Care Network. I train students at the VCOM in Spartanburg, as well students with MUSC, USC, Charleston Southern University and others.

Reviews from the web
Dr. Hurley thanks for your care and compassion. We need more like you. Keep up the effort to show the new doctors coming out of med school that the reason for being a doctor is to help people and not judge them.
My mother and family thank you.
He's said that if you take care of yourself, everything else will follow. That's certainly true in most cases, but even in cases where you need a prescription, he recognizes that and knows what's right. He's certainly the best doctor I've ever visited.
He was the first and is still the only one of whom I am aware who takes sinus/respiratory issues seriously. No one else seems to know about and prescribe a "culture and sensitivity" test to identify what antibiotic might be effective for cold/flu/respiratory congestion that has gone bacterial after starting out as viral or allergen in origin. The normal response is to follow a checklist of time and symptoms before believing a bacterial agent might be involved, and then prescribe the antibiotic of the day, which often enough, will not be effective. Then throw another dart....
We deal with the front office issues as they arise and move on. Don Hurley is too valuable to us not to. He is and will remain our Primary Care Physician, and we rue the day he decides to leave practice.
Went to see him for a prescription refill for a script I had been on for three years. Visit took almost two hours because all he wanted was to tell me about his 'walking program'. Third time I saw him and he was unbelievably inconsiderate and the only voice he wanted to hear was his own.
He went on and on about how I had gained weight and don't need to do anything but follow his program and be fine.
Not even two months before I had major foot surgery to remove a tumor- I had just gotten of crutches; walking was still painful. I gained weight because I was non weight bearing for 6 months. He even went so far to say I wouldn't have had a tumor in my foot if I followed his program. Almost in tears
So today I decided to give him one more chance (I must have had a moment of insanity). I called his office and requested an appointment and also refills on my prescriptions. The office girl said Dr. Hurley was with a patient, but she would get back to me shortly. I asked her what "shortly" meant, so I would be sure to have my phone with me. She assured me that she would get back to me this morning. It is now close to 3:00 in the afternoon, and nothing! Is it really that hard to make a phone call when you say you will do it? This has happened more times than I can remember. I have finally decided to take my healthcare elsewhere, where there is a caring and responsive doctor and staff.
Very, very poor office staff and very poor followup care.
I don't know where to start. Summary of customer service from office staff is HORRIBLE! Wait time is typically over 1 HOUR every visit and has been 2 HOURS before! Last time I was in waiting room all customers were complaining office wait time, and they couldn't wait to get another doctor.
Dr Hurley is nice, but his staff is the WORST, and he has over-committed himself - NEVER able to make appointment times. You are $ to him, not a patient.
Frequently Asked Questions
MDVIP-affiliated physicians use the Wellness Program Plus to help prevent little things from becoming big things – working to help patients enjoy life and be healthier. Those who value their health will appreciate having a closer doctor-patient relationship. Because MDVIP-affiliated physicians have smaller practices, they have more time for you, so you can receive the individualized care and service you deserve. Physicians offering the Plus program have a different set of testing to choose from than physicians in the traditional program; this testing looks at additional health risks. Plus doctors also use an advanced cognitive testing system to evaluate brain health and offer a medication review program.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
