About Laurie K.S. Tom, MD
For over 33 years, I have practiced endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism as an independent, private physician. I have built the kind of relationships that take years to earn, the kind that patients rely on through the most complex chapters of their health. In Hawaii, “It’s all about relationships.” The practice of medicine has been my calling. My philosophy of care is not only to support one’s individual pursuit of good health, but also to work together in shared decision making, also shaped by family and community.
Most of my patients come to me to help them problem solve and better manage their health conditions. Endocrine and metabolic disorders are among the most complex and interconnected in medicine. What happens with your diabetes, your thyroid or your hormonal balance touches cardiovascular health, energy, cognition and how you age. Being in the MDVIP model gives me the tools to better help you manage your chronic conditions, and I have more time to spend with you, which is not always conducive in traditional practices. I chose this model of practice because it allows me to deliver more time and personalized care that I believe patients want and need.
Together, our primary focus can include three things that help support your efforts toward long-term outcomes regarding: cardiovascular health, which metabolic disease puts at serious risk; metabolic trajectory, so that the direction of your health can move toward recovery and stability rather than decline; preserving your quality of life and health span, focusing on your energy and your pursuit of the ability to live well and thrive. These are not secondary goals. They are what I believe all my patients deserve.
I invite you to join me in this journey, being more engaged and becoming an active participant in your future health and wellness. I strive to approach your care, as always, with unwavering commitment and aloha.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
