MDVIP Wellness Program Includes Agility Screening
The importance of aerobic exercise and strength training is well known, and you’re probably aware of the benefits of stretching and balance exercises. But the value of agility training is often overlooked.
Agility is the body’s ability to move quickly and efficiently. Agility training is a priority among athletes and dancers, but it should be incorporated into everyone’s workout routine because it enhances balance and coordination. Older adults who regularly engage in agility exercises have a lower risk of falling, according to a study published in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Agility training helps your brain create new neural connections, contributing to cognitive health, and releases endorphins, helping to boost mood and lower stress.
This is why an agility screening is included in your MDVIP Wellness Program. There are two components of agility, i.e., gait speed analysis and grip strength.
Gait speed test measures the time it takes to walk a specific distance without an assistive device. Your performance indicates your level of functional mobility, ability to perform daily activities, cognitive skills, fall risk and overall health.
Grip strength test uses a grip-strength dynamometer to measure the muscle strength generated by your forearm. This measurement predicts your overall strength. The stronger you are, the better your chances are of surviving a serious disease. A poor performance on this screening also suggests a higher risk for heart disease and muscle deterioration.
The MDVIP Wellness Program also includes a fitness screener and body composition analysis. Your doctor can use results from all these screenings to develop a personal wellness program focusing on improving your fitness level. Here’s an example of a member who worked closely with their doctor to improve their health and fitness goals.
