Meet David W. Gehring, MD

Being a primary care physician trusted with the care of my patients is a privilege and honor that I hold sacred. I am proud to serve the residents of Alexandria, Virginia, and the surrounding communities, including Northern Virginia and D.C. I strive to forge a relationship with my patients based on empathy, deeper listening and compassion. Together, we can work to better improve physical and mental well-being. 

My goal is to provide more personalized medical care in a professional, peaceful and unhurried space. Consultations take place in a private, relaxing meeting room, not in an exam room like many traditional offices. My MDVIP-affiliated practice offers services, including comprehensive, advanced health screenings and diagnostic tests, that go far beyond those found in concierge medical practices. My office also offers conveniences like same- or next-day appointments with minimal wait time.

I pride myself on being a diagnostician who has more time to cover health concerns with you. I am fortunate to have a network of trusted specialists to whom I refer to assist my patients.  

I seek to optimize wellness and prevention through a more personalized program focused on diet and exercise. I have a special interest in providing risk assessments and treatment recommendations for diabetes, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke prevention. I enjoy working with patients of all ages.

Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.

Throughout my 86 years I have been to many different doctors. Dr. David Gehring is "A Number One" as was his predessor, Dr. Joel Temme. Dr. Gehring combines medical proficiency with a complete concern for his patients. I feel very safe in his care as I know he would advise me as if I were his mother.... a most comforting feeling. Denise, the receptionist, keeps the office running most efficiently and deals with phone calls with a most pleasant manner. Nurse Tatiana is great in every way and especially in blood drawing.

Dr. Gehring is new to this practice, but shows a tremendous interest in getting to know his patients. We have had personal visits and have used FaceTime to visit. David Gehring’s impact extends beyond medical competence.

This doc “humanizes” himself. He shares rather than dictates. He truly interacts and he is genuinely curious. I gather he believes it takes context (my input) in addition to all the medical data obtained from various exams and tests (blood work, EKG’s, x-rays, etc) to make it work the very best for a patient.

Dr. Gehring’s staff (Denise and Tatiana are the veteran holdovers from Dr. Temme’s* practice along with newbie Angel) are all competent, caring and well organized. Quality individuals working as a great team.

I consider myself very fortunate to be in David Gehring’s care.

*I was spoiled. The legendary “docs’ doc” Dr. Joel Temme was my previous physician of 30 years and I was very skeptical that anyone would be able to replace him. For many years I had a Women’s Imaging practice in Alexandria, Virginia and I know how patients should be cared for and treated. Dr. Gehring and his staff have the same philosophy. This practice is kind, caring and professional! It is like a visit with old friends from the moment you step in to the office to be greeted by Denise , through all preliminary testing by Tatsiana and Regina(which is extensive) to be followed by a visit with Dr. Gehring which can easily exceed 1 hour. No question goes unanswered. the physical exam is professional and thorough. We joined this practice because of Dr. Temme and his highly competent staff and stayed with them because of Dr. Gehring and an unchanged staff! In these days of 10 minute visits and undertrained staff you can’t lose with Dr. Gehring and his staff. It is well worth the drive from the foothills of the Shenandoah Mountains.

I actually tested my biological age twice using a DNA test and I was surprised at how well I did. I was 8.5 years younger biologically and I attribute it to my hiking experience on the Appalachian Trail where you can get your cardio training in real time!

It’s one thing to be available to us, but for Dr. Gehring, his compassion and thoroughness is off the charts. I emailed him with an issue on a Sunday morning and before noon we communicated, which was promptly followed by an order and a prescription.
