About Gary R. McDonald, MD

As a primary care general internist, board-certified in internal medicine since 1992, a personalized approach to health and wellness forms the core of my relationship with each patient. While I enjoy treating complex medical conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes and sleep disorders, my primary goal in practicing medicine lies in the prevention of illness.

Having been trained at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and subsequently practiced medicine at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, I have had the opportunity to treat a broad range of health issues, while still maintaining a core practice emphasizing preventive care in a general internal medicine primary care setting. I manage both men's and women's individualized health concerns, as well as collaborate with a broad range of specialists across the St. Thomas, Vanderbilt and Tri-Star health systems here in the Nashville and Middle Tennessee area, while also caring for patients from southern Kentucky and northern Alabama.

My MDVIP-affiliated practice provides opportunities for focusing on the personalized care of each patient, emphasizing the "value in prevention" as an approach to helping maintain good health by providing quality, valuable care through the MDVIP Annual Wellness Program. I also offer conveniences, like same- or next-day appointments that start on time, which may be found in concierge medicine practices. This program provides a level of preventive assessment and treatment above and beyond the care available in a traditional primary care setting.

What our members are saying

Dr. Gary McDonald has been our stellar family doctor since he took over his practice from Dr. Harrell. Dr. Harwell was great physician and friend and had been our family doctor for generations. When we met Dr. McDonald, we didn’t know what to expect from this young doctor, but he has been a godsend to our family and has continued to treat new generations of our family. He is extremely…

My husband is "tight as a tick". When we received the notice about our primary physician's practice going to MDVIP, I expected a "battle" in regards to the cost of the program. As retirees with fixed incomes, there is not a lot of wiggle room in our budget. However, because of the amazing relationship we both have with Dr. Gary McDonald, there was very little question…

He’s been my GP for 28 years. He has always been a fantastic doctor and once he became a MDVIP I signed up because I 100% trust him, he knows me and has gotten me through many different medical issues through the years. Last year was one of the most challenging health crises I’ve ever been through and it was Dr. McDonald impeccable knowledge that got me through it. There were several things…

Dr. Gary McDonald has been our Primary Care physician for 20+ years, including some years prior to his MDVIP affiliation. His concern and prompt assistance is very reassuring and greatly appreciated. Through his caring attitude and quick responses (even from his cell phone contact) we consider Dr. McDonald to be "like family"! Dr. McDonald has also provided the same quality service for my wife,…

Frequently Asked Questions

Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.

Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.

MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
