About James J. Holton, MD
Having practiced medicine for more than three decades, I’ve learned a lot about myself and about patient care. When I was fresh out of my internal medicine residency, I focused on and embraced the science of medicine. I tried to learn as much as I could about disease states and prided myself on solving diagnostic challenges. Later, I learned that practicing medicine was much more. I learned the art of medicine. I learned to listen more to develop stronger relationships with my patients. I know that a doctor provides more than facts and prescriptions.
I am invigorated by being an MDVIP-affiliated physician. I believe this model is mutually beneficial to my patients and myself in that I can spend more time with each patient to support their needs and goals. I believe in the proactive, preventive focus we can take, thanks to the advanced screenings and diagnostic tests in the annual MDVIP Wellness Program. I believe patients enjoy the conveniences that I offer, such as same- or next-day appointments and reaching me after hours.
I remember when I practiced in a traditional model: I was embarrassed by the runaround patients often endured when they had simple questions or concerns. I am committed to preventing that in my MDVIP-affiliated practice.
I have a special interest in supporting patients as they work to manage chronic disease states and minimize complications. I have a particular interest in working with patients who have diabetes, hyperlipidemia and cardiometabolic illness. I strive to guide and educate patients with unhurried discussions, longer visits and workups prior to referring them to specialists.
I want patients who join my practice to experience this new, individualized way of practicing medicine the “old way.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
