About James A. Wilcox, DO
After 25 years of practicing family medicine, I still feel fortunate every day to be in a profession where I can help people feel better, live healthier lives, and sometimes feel less alone when handling a medical problem. To me, there is no greater privilege than being trusted with someone’s health.
I believe the best medical care comes from a partnership between doctor and patient. I use current guidelines, medical studies, and the standard of care to guide my recommendations, but I also believe strongly that every patient has the right to decide what is best for his or her own life. My role is to educate, explain, encourage, and help patients understand their choices—not to pressure them. I often think of the relationship as being like a coach and a player on the same team. We are working toward the same goal together.
Every patient is different. No two people have the same values, personalities, priorities, fears, or life experiences. I genuinely enjoy getting to know my patients and understanding what makes them tick. That relationship matters because good medical care is not simply about treating a diagnosis; it is about caring for the whole person.
My goals for my patients are not only to help them live longer, but to help them live better. Prevention is a major part of my practice. I believe in identifying risks early, staying ahead of problems, and addressing issues before they become complicated. I also believe that the mind, body, and spirit are closely connected, and that it is difficult to affect one without affecting others.
I want patients to feel comfortable in my office. Over the years, many patients have told me that they were terrified of going to the doctor, but since joining my practice, they no longer feel that way and actually enjoy their visits. That means a great deal to me. Whenever possible, I want someone to leave my office feeling better than when they walked in.
After practicing in Barrington for 23 years, I have also built close relationships with outstanding specialists throughout the community. I think of them as a “dream team” of physicians I can rely on when my patients need additional expertise. I manage most problems that come through my door, but when specialty care is needed, I value having physicians I know well and can communicate with easily.
I am also deeply honored that many fellow physicians in the community have chosen me as their own primary care doctor. To me, that is one of the most meaningful compliments I can receive. At its core, my philosophy is simple: know your patients, listen to them, earn their trust, treat them as individuals, and work together to help them live healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives.

Frequently Asked Questions
Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
