My Philosophy and Approach to Wellness...

The physician patient relationship works best when it is based on mutual trust and engagement. I am excited for the opportunity to provide personalized healthcare that educates and engages my patients in their own well-being. This model of healthcare delivery is unique in allowing the time and personal contact necessary for detailed and comprehensive reviews of each patient’s individual needs and treatment options. Working together we can focus on promoting health and preventing illness, not just treating its occurrence. My MDVIP-affiliated practice, often compared to a concierge medicine practice, offers conveniences like same- or next-day appointments. I believe passionately that education is vital to fully enlisting my patients in maintaining their own well-being and becoming active agents in the plans we devise together. To be able to do so now is my privilege.

For over 20 years, since completing medical school and residency at Boston University School of Medicine, I have served my neighbors here in southeastern Connecticut. I have practiced both outpatient primary care and hospital-based medicine while on staff at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital. I have been involved in all aspects of healthcare delivery and look forward to devoting my efforts where I feel they can do the most good for my patients and my community. Combining both the experience of MDVIP in supporting the delivery of personalized primary care and now the systemic support of Hartford Healthcare, I believe that we can deliver a healthcare experience that is second to none.

Testimonials from patients of Dr. Nelson

from Louise in CT January 23, 2024 for John J. Nelson, MD

When I called Dr Nelson on a Sunday, I felt embarrassed to disturb him on a weekend day off. Immediately, he put me at ease and was not rushed to hear my ‘complaint’. He answered my questions and put me on the right track and told me not to worry. When I hung up, I felt a great sense of relief!

I do not have a singular story to sing the praise of Dr. John Nelson, but would simply like to say that he is a smart, articulate and caring physician with genuine concern for his patients. Dr. Nelson has been my PCP for several years now and has helped me through several health concerns with timely guidance and prescription calls. His ability to clearly and patiently discuss medical concerns… See more

from Seth in CT December 19, 2022 for John J. Nelson, MD

As I checked in for a recent appointment at the Perkins Campus in Mystic, receptionist Judy and I were talking about a new tribute award won by her office. I don't remember the wording on the plaque, but here's how Judy explained their success: "we all get along well together."

They work well togeher, they are a team. Judy, Christine, Nurse Chrissy, Dr. Nelson,… See more
