About Karl W. Hempel, MD
For me, wellness is about far more than addressing illness. It is about helping people as they work to stay healthier, active and engaged in the lives they value most.
My passion is practicing preventive, evidence-based medicine, and through the annual Wellness Program that I offer, I can help identify risk markers and issues that may be treated earlier or prevented. I aim to help patients as they pursue better health through lifestyle and nutrition, and I reference current medical evidence to guide my patients in their efforts to live longer, healthier lives. I believe that personalized primary care is built on strong relationships, open communication and genuinely listening to a patient’s goals, which can allow us to work together to create an individualized wellness plan.
As a lifelong Danville, KY, resident and graduate of Danville High School, I have deep roots in this community and a profound appreciation for the people and families who call Boyle County and surrounding counties home. It is truly an honor to follow in my father’s footsteps and continue the practice he has spent decades building. Equally meaningful is the opportunity to work alongside him for several years as we continue caring for our patients together.
My experience serving as Chief Resident during my internal medicine residency, combined with several years practicing traditional primary care, has reinforced my belief that patients deserve both a physician with medical experience and a more personalized approach to care. I believe in offering more time to build a trusted partnership between physician and patient. I strive to provide compassionate care while emphasizing prevention and wellness as well as educating patients on how they can maintain health through the judicious use of medications, testing and specialty referrals when appropriate.
My MDVIP-affiliated practice, often compared to a concierge medicine practice, offers conveniences like same- or next-day appointments with minimal waiting. My practice combines the advantages of more individualized medicine with my experience developed through years of traditional internal medicine practice.
I am affiliated with Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and I have more time to advocate for my patients with local specialists and healthcare providers. I strive to offer comprehensive care for my patients. Through a more personalized approach to wellness, my goal is to help patients as they work to achieve their health goals while fostering the kind of physician-patient relationship that allows them to feel known, heard and cared for in our practice family.

Frequently Asked Questions
Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
