About Matthew M. O'Brien, MD
I am a patient-focused primary care physician who believes in personalized care and that each patient is unique, not a number. My MDVIP-affiliated practice offers same- or next-day appointments, phone calls that are answered in person, and visits that are relaxed and not rushed. My patients can come in for an appointment or call me after hours (even when traveling) for more urgent matters.
My practice offers services, including comprehensive, advanced health screenings and diagnostic tests, that go far beyond those found in concierge medicine practices. The lab findings, tests and screening results from the annual MDVIP Wellness Program allow us to work together to create a more individualized wellness plan. I find that the enhanced doctor-patient relationship offered in my practice combined with the services included in the annual MDVIP Wellness Program are tools that, if properly followed, can potentially help extend the number of healthier or disease-free years of life.
I see patients from Wilmington, Delaware, as well as the Greenville, Hockessin, Centreville, Chadds Ford and Southern Chester County areas. I was born and raised in Wilmington. Both of my parents were physicians, as are two of my siblings. I am a graduate of Columbia University with a degree in applied physics engineering. I worked for a local chemical company before realizing that it was not my calling. I have been practicing with an individualized approach to medicine since I completed my medical degree at Jefferson Medical College and residency at Christiana Care more than 20 years ago.
I am a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Delaware Academy of Medicine and an appointed clinical instructor for the ChristianaCare Family Medicine Residency Program, as well as for Jefferson Medical College. I am affiliated with the ChristianaCare system.

Frequently Asked Questions
Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
