It was the early 1990's, and I was about to open my first retail store. I had interviewed several hundred people for various positions. There was a terrible flu going around that year, needless to say, I was overworked and got it. I was so sick and getting weaker that I finally called St. Thomas to find a doctor I could see that morning. The store was opening in less than 48 hours and there were still lots to do. I got in to see young "Doctor Allen". I told him the situation and that I couldn't just go home and go to bed. He listened and probably realized I wasn't going to back down. Instead of fighting with me, he had his nurse set up IV bags and fill me with fluids. Yes, I was totally dehydrated. I think he gave me a shot and scripts and said come back if you are not better in 48hrs. He could have been like the other "OLD" doctors at St. Thomas and put me in the hospital. But he didn't. I would like to also thank "Doc Allen" for the years he took care of my Mom and sister. After a couple of years of seeing him, I convinced Mom and sister to change their PC physician. It was the best decision I could have ever made. In their last years Doc Allen was only a phone call away to help me make final decision for their care and well-being. This meant everything to me, even when Mom was no longer in his care, he would look at test and tell me what was going on and what to expect. Not many Doctors will do that. Thank you! Lastly, how many people get sung to in the pouring rain by their doctor. Only Doc Allen would stand out in the rain to campaign for his wife. Now that's dedication. Thanks for the last 30 plus years of listening and not becoming one of the "OLD" doctors.

Meet Newton P. Allen Jr., MD

I have been a primary care physician in Nashville for more than three decades. I have a successful and fulfilling career practicing outpatient medicine and hospital care, as well as teaching for two medical universities and working as a leader in the Tennessee Medical Association. Treating the whole patient has always been my goal. My wonderful staff and I strive to provide more personalized and friendly care, with a touch of humor and even background music, founded on empathy, compassion and communication. Now, as an MDVIP affiliate, I approach primary care with a greater focus on prevention as well as treatment of illness. In my smaller internal medicine practice, I can offer you more individualized care and more time together. I can practice medicine the way I have always aspired and better help you improve your health and health maintenance.

My grandmother was a patient of Dr. Allen's for many years and I had no idea the horrendous care he was providing until I started attending her appointments with her, at her request. He was very rude to me the first appointment I attended and got worse at subsequent visits. If a provider is upset that his elderly patient has an advocate there with her it's not a good sign. I was just there to help her remember stuff. He was not receptive to her questions and dismissed almost everything she said. He almost treated her like she was an annoyance, and not his patient. The communication from the office regarding lab results or other tests was nonexistent. And, honestly, any sort of investigation into an ailment/issue was nonexistent. He absolutely could not be bothered to help her address any minor issues she was having. Lucky for us she is very healthy. The wait times at his office were atrocious and it was not abnormal for us to sit in the waiting room for 25 minutes, then sit in the consultation room for another 45 minutes waiting for Dr. Allen to come see us. She has since transferred and has a lovely, patient, respectful doctor at Heritage Medical Group. If your older loved ones are patients of Dr. Allen I would highly recommend you attend the appointments to make sure they are getting the level of care they deserve.

I had a stroke. Three neurologist saw me and none of them would not tell me my probable prognosis. Dr. Allen said he thought I would probably be alright based on his decades of experience.
