My Philosophy and Approach to Wellness...

I like to know my patients at a deeper level, relating to them as both their physician as well as a trusted friend. This unique relationship allows me to listen, teach, encourage and guide my patients through the complexities of medicine and their personal healthcare needs. I integrate compassion, integrity and at times devilish humor into my practice and my patients can expect to find thorough and superior health care blended with a relaxed and custom-tailored wellness approach to medicine. It's my goal that this personalized relationship and comprehensive approach to my patients' medical care will help them achieve their optimal health.

Two summers ago, I was experiencing extreme coughing/choking and shortness of breath. At the time, major California fires were turning the local air particularly smokey. My personal doctor was treating me for bronchitis. I went to a cardiologist who checked my lungs for the 'crackling sounds' I complained about. He did not think it significant enough and said to see him in 6 months. At this… See more

Dr. Smith has been my Primary Care doctor since 2003. I can't say enough wonderful things about him. He is thorough in his examinations and doesn't hesitate to recommend a specialist if needed. He really listens to you when you talk to him. He picks up on little nuances in your words, voice, posture and gently and stealthily coaxes you into sharing something that you want to… See more

Dr. Paul Smith will not shake your hand! And even in that practice, he is teaching us how to be health and stay alive. As we are being reminded with the COVID-19 virus, shaking hands is not a health practice. At the same time, he “touches” my life regularly and personally. He always takes time for me - whether in the office or on the phone. We have texted photos of skin rashes from our… See more

A little over a year ago, I woke up on Monday morning and took my coffee out by the pool. After a vigorous weekend of motorcycle racing, I was a bit sore all over. But noticed it most in my pecs. Hmm, I thought , I didn’t think I was that out of shape. Then a sudden and pretty severe dizzy spell hit, but faded after 5 seconds or so. But it was enough to convince me something was amiss. So… See more

A few years ago, I was driving out of town with my teenage son for the weekend. I had been experiencing chest pain that would not go away and decided to check in with Paul Smith before I got too far from town. I pulled into a gas station and made the call and he answered right away. Reviewing my history, he knew that my situation was not a heart attack. He took the time to explain what was… See more

I told Dr. Paul R. Smith that I must like men with his name, since my husband is also called Paul Smith. Both of them have enhanced the quality of my existence-- the latter as my spouse for almost 50 years and the former as my doctor for almost 8 years. Dr. Paul R. Smith is a terrific listener, he responds immediately whenever I communicate with him, he puts my test results in perspective,… See more
