About R. Erik Hartvigsen, MD
My primary care practice provides highly personalized medical care and attention, with an emphasis on prevention and wellness. Family medicine prides itself on specializing in the patient over organ systems and body parts. I work hard each day to help my patients get optimal advice and care. My affiliation with MDVIP gives me an added partner that can expand the scope of resources to assure patient care is of high value.
As an Army brat, I believe in leading from the front. This means that I practice what I preach. This tends to make recommendations believable and attainable. Medical plans always involve patient goals of care alongside recommended practices.
I am board certified in family medicine with certificates of additional qualification in sleep medicine, hospice and palliative care. I enjoy sports medicine as an offshoot of my years of competitive soccer coaching.
I am affiliated with Providence Hospital downtown and northeast, Prisma Baptist Medical Center, Columbia and Prisma Richland Memorial hospitals. My medical interests are wellness, prevention and sports medicine. This allows my patients to enjoy better health. My palliative care background affords my chronically ill patients better quality of life in their sunset years.
My practice serves Richland, Lexington, Kershaw and Fairfield counties and the surrounding area.

Reviews from the web

I appreciate the effort made to work me and or my wife into the daily schedule when special medical needs arise. My health has greatly improved since coming to this medical practice. I love the specific, individualized medical care and the exact explanations provided for suggested diagnosis and additional care. This is the type of care I was hoping to receive, and I have not been disappointed in any way. I love this medical practice as it has allowed our quality of life to grow. It provides us with a hope that our future medical needs will be handled with an utmost sense of urgency and concern.

Frequently Asked Questions
Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
