About Sandra M. Garred, MD
After more than 25 years, I still love practicing internal medicine. I enjoy my patient interactions, the relationships I get to have as I learn about my patients’ medical histories, personal histories and present situations that may impact their well-being.
This is an exciting time. The research regarding lifestyle and dietary interventions, including the use of nutraceuticals and how it may help change the course of one's health, is exploding. I take my own health seriously. I spend time learning what I can do to stay not only physically healthy but cognitively sharp as I age as well. I try to share what I learn with patients. If I suggest a lifestyle idea, I am likely doing it myself! I welcome questions from patients as they navigate this element of their health.
I have an interest in the "root cause" of disease in the field of functional medicine. My approach is not to throw pills at numbers and symptoms at first. Rather, I can work with patients to try to help address a problem through lifestyle approaches. If medication is needed, we can discuss that, though I desire to help patients get off prescription medication, if possible. Even with this approach, I know it is vital to meet patients where they are and partner with them to make a plan that works in their pursuit of their health goals.
This approach takes time – time I used to struggle to offer in a traditional medical practice. The MDVIP model offers me the opportunity to spend more time with patients. My MDVIP-affiliated practice offers services, including comprehensive, advanced health screenings and diagnostic tests, that go far beyond those found in concierge medicine practices. With a smaller practice located in Fredericksburg, Texas, I offer appointments the same or next day for acute symptoms or concerns.
Finally, my aim is to offer an integrative medicine approach. Though there is an official definition, mine is one that incorporates three pillars: The first is current evidence-based medicine; the second is alternative and holistic medicine; and the third pillar is my Christian faith. When appropriate, I may ask patients how they feel about this approach and whether they are going through a challenging time. My purpose is not to preach, but just to let a patient know I may add them to my prayers. “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” Luke 1:37

Frequently Asked Questions
Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
