About Shawn Laney, MD

I believe that patients have unique health journeys and goals for living their fullest lives. As your internal medicine physician, I strive to create a customized wellness plan that reflects and respects what matters to you, while providing medical guidance and expertise. I also aim to foster a collaborative relationship to help improve your patient experience and outcomes.

In addition to general internal medicine, I am interested in cardiovascular disease prevention, cholesterol management and nutrition as a way of helping to optimize health and minimize illness.

I started my career in medicine in Austin over 20 years ago. Before I shifted my focus to preventive and primary care, I worked as a hospital-based physician, treating a range of acute illnesses, such as heart attacks, strokes and various infectious diseases. In my time in Austin-area hospitals, I built relationships within the Austin medical community, which helps me refer you to specialists when needed.

My MDVIP-affiliated practice offers services, including comprehensive, advanced health screenings and diagnostic tests, which go far beyond those found in most concierge medicine practices. I also offer conveniences like same- or next-day appointments. My friendly staff provides patient-centric customer service and communication.

I am in my early 80’s. Earlier this year, I was seeking a new primary care doctor in Austin, Texas. Based on a recommendation from a friend I selected Dr Shawn Laney. I am very happy that I did so. He began by very thoroughly assessing multiple aspects of my medical condition, discussing my needs and concerns and implementing changes. Throughout the process, I felt that he was not just…

I am 89 years old. During the entirety of my adult life I have chosen primary care providers who were highly qualified, highly regarded and, in most cases, members of leading full scale medical offices. A year ago, based on recommendations of trusted friends and an initial favorable experience I selected Dr Shawn Laney at the MDVIP office in West Lake Hills Texas as my primary care physician. I…

For no particular reason, I have been averse to going on a statin, even though my total cholesterol has always been high, as has my LDL cholesterol. On an office visit a couple of years ago, when I was 76 y.o., I went to see Dr. Laney for an annual exam. As he normally did, Dr. Laney discussed my elevated cholesterol and increased risk of coronary artery disease, even though I had no cardiac…

I'm so grateful for how easy it is to engage with Dr. Laney. When i first consulted him in 2022, it was for anti-malarial medication for a safari in Africa, and he spent a generous amount of time explaining my options and including me in the selection of the right one for me. Last September he prescribed medication to prevent altitude sickness that I took when i visited Peru and Machu Picchu…

Frequently Asked Questions

Doctors who operate in the MDVIP models typically see far fewer patients than traditional primary care doctors. That gives them more time to develop deeper doctor-patient relationships that can lead to better outcomes. They can also offer conveniences that most primary care doctors can’t, including same- and next-day appointments. They’re available after hours for urgent matters. And they have time to focus on prevention. That focus begins with the MDVIP Wellness Program, which patients pay for with their annual membership fee.

Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.

MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
