With nearly two decades of experience practicing internal medicine in South Orange and the neighboring Essex County communities, it has been my privilege to build a personal bond with many of my patients. Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.

I saw Dr. Shapiro two times before finding another doctor. As the other reviewers have mentioned, her front desk staff is simply atrocious. After my first appointment, the staff was supposed to follow up on getting me a sleep apnea machine. I called the office no less than six times over the following month, and now, seven weeks after that first appointment, I still haven't heard back from them. At my second follow-up appointment, Dr. Shapiro ordered an MRI and the staff, once again, was supposed to call my insurance company to find out where I could go to get an open MRI. That appointment was two weeks ago. I called today, having not heard anything about the MRI or the sleep apnea machine to find out what was going on, and someone who sounded like a high school kid working in the office over the summer answered the phone. He said, "what's your name?" and then "I'll have Sonta call you back when she's not busy". I then asked him, "would you like my telephone number?" Needless to say, I just made an appointment to start seeing another doctor. Dealing with the front desk people will raise your blood pressure.

Dr Shapiro is fantastic, was shocked to see low ratings on here. She is thorough in her diagnosis, asks many questions and explains her reasoning when assigning a diagnosis. She correctly diagnosed my wife in one instance when the hospital misdiagnosed her and I would highly recommend her to anyone. Most of the few complaints were about staff but I never had a bad experience, they are always polite and do what is required. The complaint of them not sending a prescription is bull, the doctor sends that electronically now and that's been the case for years.

She made a mistake and sent my blood test to the wrong lab out of network so now I have to pay $300 out of my pocket for something that could have been covered 100% in-network by my insurance. Dr. Shapiro is truly an exceptional doctor, thorough, compassionate and highly professional. She has always addressed my health concerns proactively and never has dismissed any fears or discomfort. She has helped me gain clarity about my own medical information and empowered me to take steps to improve my wellbeing and work ahead of potential conditions that could be brought on by heredity, environment, or life stressors. Her office staff, Kelly, is likewise of top caliber, always ready to help, facilitate appts, genuinely care, answer questions, etc. the in office lab is a plus and staffed by a true professional, never any anxiety or stress in having bloods drawn. I cannot recommend this practice highly enough!

Dr. Shapiro is a knowable diagnostician (who may have saved my life by quickly diagnosing a problem I had) and has a large reservoir of knowledge on a wide range of medical issues, from nutritional supplements and the latest COVID thinking, to heart health and orthopedics. But, in the words of Ron Popeil, there is more. She is responsive, compassionate, communicates clearly, and acts as an all-pro quarterback of all my medical professionals. And her nurse Kelley is a star.
