About James Okamoto, MD, ABFM
My passion as a family physician is to not only to help prevent illness, but to also educate patients on how to improve their health so they can thrive no matter what stage of life they are in. I have been practicing medicine for over 30 years and chaired a family medicine department on the mainland before starting a private practice in Waikele. I also enjoy working with Navy Corpsmen, as well as serving on over 50 medical missions overseas.
Several truths have been reinforced to me over time. First, every individual who walks into my office is unique, and to really improve health, their care needs to be personalized. Second, if I can educate patients on how to live healthier lives every day, then their future health may require less medications, hospitalizations and ER visits. As Benjamin Franklin said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” I am pleased to be one of the few MDVIP-affiliated physicians in the country offering the MDVIP Wellness Program Plus, a program that incorporates a cognitive screening and personal medication management program in addition to other extensive advanced diagnostic tests. This will help me to better detect early signs of dementia, heart disease and stroke, and also help reduce the risk of adverse medication events.
As your personal primary care doctor, I will take the necessary time to review your records, discuss lab results and help identify your concerns and goals. I am committed to building a strong doctor-patient relationship by being there for you and your ohana when there is a new health issue or illness and to help you along your personal journey to wellness. Similar to concierge medicine practices, I also offer conveniences like same- or next-day appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions
MDVIP-affiliated physicians use the Wellness Program Plus to help prevent little things from becoming big things – working to help patients enjoy life and be healthier. Those who value their health will appreciate having a closer doctor-patient relationship. Because MDVIP-affiliated physicians have smaller practices, they have more time for you, so you can receive the individualized care and service you deserve. Physicians offering the Plus program have a different set of testing to choose from than physicians in the traditional program; this testing looks at additional health risks. Plus doctors also use an advanced cognitive testing system to evaluate brain health and offer a medication review program.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
