My Philosophy and Approach to Wellness...

My passion as a family physician is to not only to help prevent illness, but to also educate patients on how to improve their health so they can thrive no matter what stage of life they are in. I have been practicing medicine for over 30 years and chaired a family medicine department on the mainland before starting a private practice in Waikele. I also enjoy working with Navy Corpsmen, as well as serving on over 50 medical missions overseas.

Several truths have been reinforced to me over time. First, every individual who walks into my office is unique, and to really improve health, their care needs to be personalized. Second, if I can educate patients on how to live healthier lives every day, then their future health may require less medications, hospitalizations and ER visits. As Benjamin Franklin said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” I am pleased to be one of the few MDVIP-affiliated physicians in the country offering the MDVIP Wellness Program Plus, a program that incorporates a cognitive screening and personal medication management program in addition to other extensive advanced diagnostic tests. This will help me to better detect early signs of dementia, heart disease and stroke, and also help reduce the risk of adverse medication events.

As your personal primary care doctor, I will take the necessary time to review your records, discuss lab results and help identify your concerns and goals. I am committed to building a strong doctor-patient relationship by being there for you and your ohana when there is a new health issue or illness and to help you along your personal journey to wellness. Similar to concierge medicine practices, I also offer conveniences like same- or next-day appointments.

Testimonials from patients of Dr. Okamoto

from Pearl in HI February 19, 2024 for James Okamoto, MD, ABFM

I appreciate Doctor James Okamoto so much. From my very first visit with him, he has always been attentive to my concerns, never rushing me, but giving me all the time I needed. His advice and input has been right on, practical and encouraging. He is like no other doctor I have gone to. Since he is young and I am quite elderly, I hope to have him as my physician for life!

from Carolyn in HI January 19, 2024 for James Okamoto, MD, ABFM

My mom has always been active and healthy until this past New Years Day when she tripped and fell, cutting her knee deeply on some rocks. We rushed her to the ER where she got 41 stitches. Our primary care doctor, doctor James Okamoto, immediately followed up with us after we were discharged. And he continued to see us every few days. When my mom developed an infection, Dr. Okamoto advised us… See more
