About W. Melvin Brown III, MD
As a dedicated physician and proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, I am committed to what I believe are the principles of preventive medicine and physical readiness. I define readiness as a state of being fully prepared for something. I wish to partner with you to find your own personal definition of readiness and work with you as you pursue your health goals.
I believe that a proactive approach to healthcare is essential for fostering a healthier society. I have seen it in action with the Department of Defense's annual physical readiness assessments. Unfortunately, in the years since retiring from naval service, I have witnessed a healthcare system that often falls short in this regard. I believe physicians want to do well by their patients but are often too overwhelmed with non-clinical duties. This realization inspired my transition from the hospital setting to a more individualized model of practice. It should be no surprise that I affiliated with MDVIP, the leader in personalized healthcare, so I have more time to spend with patients to focus on personalized care and help empower them to take charge of their health.
I am not slender. I love fine cuisine, and I am not one to turn down a fine vintage wine. But I am mindful of what I consume, I track wellness indicators and, importantly, I exercise my body. My goal is to retain the strength and capability that will allow me to participate in an active lifestyle.
I have traveled the world, and I have cared for people in many environments. I am board certified in emergency medicine, and as such I strive to help you work to prevent a visit to urgent care or emergency room. If it should come to that, I can help take you by the hand and advocate for your appropriate care in an appropriate facility.
I strive to cultivate an environment where forward-looking measures are not just encouraged but celebrated. By emphasizing education, lifestyle modification and healthcare resources, I aim to help individuals as they work to achieve optimal health and resilience without always having to resort to the prescription pad. I hope to help equip you to face the challenges of life with more strength and confidence.
I am a native Charlestonian and my office is situated on the upper peninsula on King Street. I grew up in this neighborhood and, after retiring from service, I bought a home one block away from my childhood home. I am invested in my community. I serve and have served on many boards, including the board for a statewide hospital system. I have relationships with all the major hospital systems in the Charleston Tri-County, South Carolina, area.
My MDVIP-affiliated practice offers services, including comprehensive, advanced health screenings and diagnostic tests, that go far beyond those found concierge medicine practices.

Frequently Asked Questions
MDVIP-affiliated physicians use the Wellness Program Plus to help prevent little things from becoming big things – working to help patients enjoy life and be healthier. Those who value their health will appreciate having a closer doctor-patient relationship. Because MDVIP-affiliated physicians have smaller practices, they have more time for you, so you can receive the individualized care and service you deserve. Physicians offering the Plus program have a different set of testing to choose from than physicians in the traditional program; this testing looks at additional health risks. Plus doctors also use an advanced cognitive testing system to evaluate brain health and offer a medication review program.
MDVIP makes wellness and prevention easier by providing your physician with innovative tools and technology. MDVIP supports your physician’s practice and seeks to eliminate barriers to a positive healthcare experience. Your doctor will determine whether and how to incorporate these tools at his/her discretion.
Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your annual fee pays for preventive care medical services that insurance usually doesn’t cover (e.g., advanced diagnostic testing and screenings). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.
