Father's Day post 6/21: Happy Father’s Day! The men in our lives protect us – whether they’re our partners, fathers or sons. Unfortunately, many of them don’t protect themselves from health issues. And there’s a surprising gap in understanding many basic men’s health issues. Want to know the truth about men’s health? Read our men's health discussion guide. https://www.mdvip.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Mens-Health-Discussion-Guide.pdf

Did you ever wonder why I always check your vitamin D levels and ask if you’re taking your supplements? This blog, written by my colleague, Dr. Andrea Klemes, MDVIP’s chief medical officer, explains the importance of the sunshine vitamin.

Practically half of my patients have high blood pressure. You’re probably aware that lowering your sodium intake can help lower your blood pressure. But you may not be aware that increasing your potassium intake also helps control it. If you’re struggling to manage your blood pressure, let’s talk. In the meantime, read this blog to learn more.

I always encourage my patients to get between seven and nine hours of quality sleep each night. However, some of my patients like to burn the midnight oil and take naps when needed, but that’s not a healthy approach. A recent study found that people who nap regularly have higher blood pressure. Here’s what you need to know.

Most of my patients are not familiar with phthalates. These “everywhere chemicals” are found in many household and personal care items, and leach into the environment. They’re problematic because they can disrupt the endocrine system, damage the reproductive and neurological systems, and have been linked to obesity, asthma, allergies and some forms of cancer. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to lower your exposure to phthalates. Here’s what you need to know.

Like most people, my patients are concerned about Alzheimer’s disease. When Alzheimer’s is diagnosed at an earlier stage, medications may be able to slow the progression; however, historically, Alzheimer’s diagnostic tests have been limited. There is good news. The FDA approved a blood test in 2025 that can help diagnose Alzheimer’s during earlier stages. If you think you may be experiencing Alzheimer’s symptoms, reach out to me. Here’s what you need to know about this new test.

I preach to my patients the importance of eating a gut-friendly diet. Poor gut health can lead to digestive issues, a weak immune system, skin problems and sleep disturbances. Where should you begin? Start by incorporating probiotics, prebiotics and postbiotics into your diet. Here’s what you need to know.

Extreme heat can be problematic for your health, especially if you’re active outdoors. At the beginning of each summer, I educate my patients on how to prevent heat-related issues. Here’s what I tell them.

Many of my patients are very germ-conscious, regularly using hand sanitizers, wipes and cleaners at home and while on the go. But can taking these precautions really help prevent illness? Not necessarily. Here’s what you need to know.

Psoriasis is a chronic disease in which T-cells of the immune system attack healthy skin cells. The number of psoriasis cases is rising; in fact, I’m seeing it in my own practice. Experts believe the rise may be related to the unhealthy American lifestyle. If you’re struggling with psoriasis, let’s talk; in the meantime, try these dietary changes.

If you’re depressed or anxious, talk to me. You may need antidepressants. While a recent study has linked these drugs with sudden cardiac death, I’m not sure that’s the real issue. I strongly encourage my patients to eat whole foods; however, I realize that it’s not easy. Almost 50 percent of foods and 40 percent of beverages sold at supermarkets are considered ultra-processed. These foods have been tied to chronic diseases, and a recent study links them to premature death. Here are eight tips to help lower your consumption of ultra-processed foods.

Many of my patients admit they eat junk food. While I encourage you to limit unhealthy foods as much as possible, the truth is I also indulge from time to time. In fact, most Americans do. It usually stems from cravings. But there are some tips you can try to help control these cravings. Here’s what you need to know.

Rice is a staple in many countries, but it can be controversial in the U.S. because it’s so highly processed. But rice is also gluten-free and rich in vitamins, minerals and flavonoids. Flavonoids are plant pigments with possible anti-cancer properties. Rice comes in a wide variety, and some variations are healthier than others. Here are some tips I share with my patients on choosing healthier rice.

If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ll need to take a good, hard look at your diet, starting with your protein intake. Many of my patients wonder which type of protein is better for weight control – plant-based or animal-based. Here’s what you need to know.

Now that the weather is warmer, many of my patients will spend more time outdoors, engaged in activities. Unfortunately, many of them will wear unsupportive shoes, such as sandals and flip-flops, which raise the risk of plantar fasciitis. If you’ve ever experienced plantar fasciitis, you know how painful and debilitating it can be. Check out these tips to help you lower your risk for the condition and treat it at home.

About 35 percent of adults have a sleep disorder. Unfortunately, sleep deprivation can lead to a wide range of serious health issues and injuries. The good news is, as a primary care doctor, I may be able to help you. If you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep, talk to me about it. In the meantime, here’s more on sleep disorders.

During office visits, you may have heard me mention triglycerides, a type of blood fat. They often take a backseat to cholesterol, but they can raise your risk for heart disease. Here’s what you need to know.

In 2010, chicken overtook red meat as the most popular meat consumed in the U.S., according to the USDA. One reason is that red meat consumption is considered a risk for heart disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. But is it really? If you love steaks and cheeseburgers, keep reading; my colleague, Dr. Louis Malinow, may have some good news for you.

Many of my patients love soda, which I’m never thrilled to hear. Regular soda is very high in sugar and considered a culprit in the US obesity epidemic, which is why many turned to diet soda. But can sugar-free beverages, like diet sodas, help you lose weight? A recent study says no. Here’s what you need to know.
https://www.mdvip.com/patients/resources/are-sugar-free-beverages-helping-you-lose-weight-study-says-no

Some of my soda-loving patients are now drinking prebiotic sodas because they taste like soda and are available in typical soda flavors but have added fiber and fewer calories and grams of sugar. Are they worth the hype? Here’s what you need to know.

Losing weight and keeping it off is not easy. When one of my patients decides to go on a weight loss journey with the intention of losing a significant amount of weight. I warn them they may not reach their goal weight, but they will be healthier (and possibly happier) for trying. Here’s why.
