I had a mastectomy for breast cancer (DCIS) with no follow up treatment recommended; however, my gynecologist refused to continue supporting hormone replacement therapy (HRT). I have been on an HRT regimen since my late 20’s due to deep endometriosis necessitating removal of my ovaries. Immediately, I began experiencing extreme hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause. For over 50 years HRT has been an essential contributor to my quality of life—physically, mentally, and emotionally. At 78 years of age—when I first saw Dr. Steven Yang, my MDVIP—I had consulted my cancer surgeon and fully researched the pros and cons of continuing HRT after cancer surgery. My conclusion was that for me the upside quality of life benefits outweighed the downside risk. Dr. Yang understood that I was making an informed decision and supported me.
