4 years ago I stopped by Dr Doerman's office to see about getting some allergy meds as I was having an annoying minor swallowing issue. It was allergy season for me so figured I had some swollen glands. Went in to the office and saw a member of his staff who noticed that one of my tonsils was inflamed and one wasn't. An odd situation so she discussed with Dr Doerman. Dr Doerman suggested to be sure I go see an ENT doctor to make sure there was nothing more going on. The ENT doctor was highly recommended but had limited hours of availability and far from my place of work so was debating whether or not to go for such a minor issue. The comment about how unusual my tonsils looked ultimately compelled me to go. Upon examining me the ENT specialist immediately said I had tonsil cancer and if it had spread I would be looking at chemotherapy and radiation, a 90% chance in her view. I would also have to re- learn how to swallow given the location of the tumor among other terrible side effects. I had the tonsil surgically removed several weeks later, an extremely difficult procedure. After removal of over 50 lymph nodes the ENT doctor found none of them were cancerous. Had this not been caught as early as it was my life would have changed forever.
