Because I had a history of smoking for most of my life, Dr. Benson suggested placing me in a local program for annual low-dose scans of the chest. The third annual scan detected a spot on my lung so another scan was scheduled for three months later. I was completely asymptomatic but that scan revealed an increase in the size of the spot. Two weeks later, after further tests, my right lower lobe was removed, followed by 12 weeks of chemotherapy. Subsequent scans have detected no more cancer, and I consider myself cancer-free due to Dr. Benson's concern and proactive prevention measures.
