Meet Jeffrey Heckert, MD, FAAFP
The foundation of primary care is prevention. Preventive medicine has been my passion throughout my career. Always looking for a better way to provide these services for my patients, it has been frustrating to live within the confines of the traditional practice of medicine. I have 30 plus years of experience and am excited to be able to offer my patients individualized and personalized care, all while having my undivided attention.
I first moved to the Lewes/Rehoboth area when I was 17 years old. I found that I was pulled toward the medical field after working many years as a Lifeguard with the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, providing emergency first aid services. I still remember receiving a call from my father, while at work, telling me that I had been accepted to medical school. In fact, he was so impressed that the school had sent me a personalized letter that read: “Welcome to Jeff” (really it meant “Welcome to Jefferson Medical College”).
After four years of medical school in Philadelphia and three years of family medicine residency at the Medical Center of Delaware (Christiana Care), I finally opened my first practice in 1991 in Rehoboth Beach. Fast Forward to today, my partners and I have been able to build the largest and most successful primary care practice in Sussex County, something I am extremely proud of and grateful for.
My wife and I live in Lewes with our dog Rhett. We enjoy spending time on the water, as there is nothing like the feeling of freedom leaving the confines of the shore and heading out in to the Atlantic for some fresh air. I am an avid woodworker; I have always loved building things and have recently tried to master woodturning.
All of these experiences have molded the way I practice medicine. Utilizing my engineering background daily as I solve problems to both diagnose and prevent disease. I look forward to being your personal physician and working together to help you be the healthiest version of yourself.

Most MDVIP-affiliated primary care practices accept insurance (your physician can tell you whether they accept your specific insurance plan). Your MDVIP-affiliated physician will continue to bill your insurance and charge copays, co-insurances and deductibles as he or she currently does for other medical services like sick visits.

Mike and I chose Jeffrey after reviewing several family doctors in the area. He is personable but more so as an MDVIP doctor member. We feel we can spend as much time as we choose and he is receptive to what we choose to talk about. We have had some issues but He has taken care of them in a very professional way. We are renewing our MDVIP membership this year. At our age, the security of knowing we can contact a medical professional and get immediate response is a reassuring condition.

I have lived in DE for 2 1/2 years. Prior to that, I had lived in SC and had participated in MDVIP since 2010. Thus I knew what to expect, or at least what I hoped I could expect. I have not been disappointed. Dr. Heckert has proven himself to be quite competent, professional, patient, and personable. His staff is very supportive and helpful. Fortunately, despite my age (83), I have no serious health issues. Aside from two mild cases of Covid, I haven’t needed to see Dr. Heckert except twice a year for my Medicare physical and MDVIP physical. As long as I follow his advice regarding lifestyle and diet, I hope it stays that way for a long time!
